A Look Back at ASHHRA24

For nearly 15 years, The Water Coolers have entertained audiences around the world with their high energy, uncommonly funny, honest take on work and life. Smartphones, conference calls, kids, co-workers, and travel are just a few of the topics this group of top NYC talent turns into hilarious sketch comedy and song. The focus of the keynote is "Getting to Great Performance," and is designed to help people recognize issues in the workplace and then provide tactics to avoid or manage issues related to personal and team performance.

"None of us stand on any summit in life without a lot of people that help get us there. ... Make sure that you have the right team. As HR leaders, you are the team leaders, the ones orchestrating everything, and the glue that holds the team together."
– Jeff Glasbrenner

We want to extend a sincere thank you to our sponsors, exhibitors, and business partners for another great year in the Exhibit Hall. We couldn't do any of this without their support. Their commitment to ASHHRA and its members made the ASHHRA 54th Annual Conference & Exposition an experience to remember.

You can find a list of all the #ASHHRA18 exhibitors and sponsors in the Conference App, so be sure to follow-up with the people you met with here in Pittsburgh!

Yesterday concluded the final day of Exhibit Hall activities. Many lucky attendees went home with a variety of prizes including an Amazon Echo, iPads, designer purses, gift cards, coolers, and even a new TV. Thanks for participating in the Passbook to Prizes!

Conference Chat

We took a few minutes to chat with CHHR certificate holder Gareth Holdstock, CHHR, Chief Human Resources Officer, Abrazo Arrowhead Campus, to learn more about what certification means and why it's important to him and his colleagues.

Why is important to be certified in health care human resources?

Certification is important, because it validates the knowledge and skills that you have as an HR professional, particularly in health care. The CHHR is valuable because it’s specifically relevant to health care and includes a lot of things that go beyond human resources, like operations within the hospital and a lot of things that are relevant to the work we do in a hospital setting today.

What makes health care HR different?

Health care is really different because of the complexity. Health care organizations are very complex and you interact with staff at every level possible, from the dietary and housekeeping staff all the way up to the CEO and physicians. There’s not a lot of other positions where it’s almost like running a small town.

Why is it important to maintain your certification?

There’s a lot of change in the industry right now, so maintaining relevance is important. To maintain the certification you have to keep up with continuing education and that helps you remain current with what’s going on in health care.

What advice would give someone who is new to health care HR?

Get to know the business. Spend time on the floor with the nurses and nurse leaders. Spend time with radiology, in the OR, etc. Make it a point to understand the importance of the work we do and the impact human resources has on the organization. It’s really important to know your business to be a successful human resources person.
