We took a few minutes to chat with two experienced CHHR certificate holders to learn more about how ASHHRA events have helped them prepare and how they can help the next class of CHHR exam takers.
Bill Horn, CHHR, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, MBA
Senior Human Resources Director, UMC Physicians
CHHR since 2013
Marie Stehmer, CHHR
Senior Director of Human Resources, PeaceHealth Oregon Network
CHHR since 2016
How can attending
#ASHHRA17 help members prepare for the CHHR exam?
Marie: The quality of the sessions and the diversity of topics is
invaluable, covering both the big picture strategic things as well as the
day-to-day issues that we all address.
Bill: Because the sessions are organized by various tracks,
attendees can easily select sessions that address specific areas of competency
that they need more focus on.
Why was it important
for you to gain your CHHR?
Marie: Health care is really different and unique from other
industries, because it is all about caring for people. Having a certification
that demonstrates your competency specifically in health care HR is a real
differentiator.
Bill: Like any certification or accomplishment, the CHHR
demonstrates your high level of competence in a specific field, and it can be a
culmination of much of your professional experiences.
What would you advise
those who may be considering whether to take the CHHR exam? And how should they prepare?
Marie: First, make sure that you’re qualified, or close to
qualifying, to take the exam. If you’ve been in this field for a while, you
probably know more than you think to be prepared for the exam. Then, find a way
to study that works for you, whether it’s through group meetings like I did, or
some other way that fits with your needs.
Bill: Don’t be intimidated by it and don’t underestimate how
much you know! Obviously, no one knows everything, which is why it’s so
valuable to collaborate with your colleagues. Once you’ve made the decision,
stay committed!
