Get Ready for ASHHRA24
Mondays tend to get a bad rap, but not this week! We have so much in store for you today in Grapevine, that it might even be the best day of the week. Today is the last full day of #ASHHRA16, and it’s a fantastic start to the week ahead.

Begin your day with Sunrise Yoga, then join us for a Health Care Strategy Breakfast with lean health care expert Mark Graban. Afterwards, attend Learning Sessions where you can earn CEUs, then join us in the Exhibit Hall for lunch and the last chance to fill your Passbook to Prizes. Two blocks of Learning Sessions round out the afternoon, then the evening is free to explore Grapevine with colleagues and friends.

Ann Rhoades kicked off #ASHHRA16 yesterday with a dynamic and compelling presentation in which she extolled the value-based strategies that she has guided organizations through for much of her 25-plus year career as a consultant and author.

"You have to consciously design your culture, don’t just let it happen," she advised attendees. "It’s not about the values that you post on the wall, but about what you do every day. It’s not about the words, but about the associated behaviors."

She shared her Five Keys to a Built on Values Model:
1. Organizations need to figure out who they want to be and make those values their blueprint.
2. Spend time and effort to hire "A Players" who have the competencies and the values.
3. People want to be held accountable — not just for outcomes, but for getting them the right way. And want to be recognized for it.
4. You cannot be better on the outside than on the inside. Organizations have to care about every caregiver that works for them, because they’re the ones building the brand every day.
5. You must have continuous improvement.

Ann shared numerous funny, touching and insightful anecdotes from some of her most well-known clients in the airline industry, JetBlue and Southwest, as well as examples a bit closer to home from Hill Country Memorial health care system, right here in Texas. These companies embody consciously designed cultures where behaviors matter, not words. They also share the essential trait of being led by a CEO who truly lives the values that the company believes in.

Storytelling, in fact, is essential to creating a values-based culture, said Ann: "Culture is the collection of behaviors in an organization. You need to collect the stories of people living your values and people will remember those stories and emulate those behaviors."

    A Look Back
Recent National Labor Relations Board Issues of Importance to Health Care Providers

This session provided a true insider’s view of the National Labor Relations Board, thanks to the Honorable Phillip Miscimarra, who joined the Board for a four-year term in 2013. Along with co-presenter G. Roger King, senior labor and employment counsel for the HR Policy Association, he took a closer look at some of the significant decisions issued by the NLRB in the past year.

Miscimarra acknowledged the many challenges currently faced by HR professionals, especially in the health care environment. As the lone dissenting voice in many of the recent NLRB opinions, Miscimarra expressed some regret about the lack of unanimous outcomes. At the same time, he shared some of his quirkier dissents, including references to both Voldemort and Spock.  A "Let’s Test the Experts" game made clear that in many cases, "The problem is not with employers, the problem is that the standard is too hard to understand," he explained, providing examples where even NLRB board members did not always agree with the policies.

Among the initiatives outlined in the session were several that will have potentially far-reaching effects for HR professionals:
    • Misclassicifciation of individuals as independent contractors as a potential unfair labor practice – employer depriving individuals of Section 7 Rights under NLRA
    • Initiative to expand Weingarten" rights, including expansion to non-union represented employees
    • Cases involving allegations that "English-only" policies violate the NLRA
    • Cases involving the expansion of the right of employees to utilize employer electronic communication systems in addition to email systems – expansion of the board’s Purple Communications decision
    • Cases involving access to employer property during union organizing campaigns – "equal access issues"
