Yesterday’s Opening Ceremony and Keynote Speaker Debbi Fields
Yesterday morning kicked off the ASHHRA 50th Annual Conference & Exposition. Board President Maureen O'Keeffe, SPHR, CHHR, gave a warm welcome to all in attendance and emphasized the significance of the success of ASHHRA over the past 50 years and how it has all been fueled by volunteer steam. Dawn Rose, JD, PHR, the new ASHHRA executive director, took the stage and introduced herself to attendees, and Interim Executive Director Mary Anne Kelly was warmly thanked for stepping in when ASHHRA needed her most.

Sponsored by Cigna, Debbi Fields, the keynote speaker, spoke of her story from starting with virtually nothing to wanting to make a name for herself and doing what she loved and was passionate about... which was, out of all things, baking chocolate chip cookies.

Fields turned her passion into a worldwide business that we know today as Mrs. Fields®, and during her talk, she inspired attendees to be passionate about what they do. She spoke of True Wealth and what that meant to her growing up: family, friends and loving what you do. In speaking to the HR professional in us, she advised that we should never hire/select people who do not have a true passion for what they do. Passion is everything, and although we can teach a job, we cannot teach someone to be passionate about what they do.

In addition, she said we all need to challenge ourselves to be uncomfortable because that’s when we’re able to grow and become better leaders. Never be too scared to put yourself out there. "The greatest failure of all is not to try," Fields said.

Yesterday’s Learning Session
Thought Leader Forum Results: Meet Your Future Leader - Engaging and Empowering Women to Achieve Success in Health Care

Presented by thought leaders and TIAA-CREF, yesterday’s learning session on engaging and empowering women in the health care setting was based off a July 10, 2014, whitepaper produced by ASHHRA.

Staggering statistics were shared throughout the session; most notably, even though women account for 80 percent of the workforce in health care, only 18 percent are in leadership roles and 4 percent are CEOs. The session brainstormed and polled the audience on how to better close this gap in the health care setting. Many think that we’ll first have to overcome cultural and social norms before we’re able to really make a change.

It was stressed that if we don’t start being intentional with the work we’re doing, we’re not going to move forward. Attendees shared their best practices, their challenges with encouraging women to enter leadership roles and how we have to move forward together in order to pick up from the plateau reached after the women movements in the 60s and 70s.

The end of the session emphasized the business case for helping and encouraging more women to enter leadership roles in health care. It was stated that in growing hospitals and medical centers, women comprise 25 percent of leaders vs. 18 percent for the industry as a whole. That statistic alone proves that engaging women is a solution to health care’s critical business needs.

What’s your first impression of this year’s conference?
Everyone is so embracing. It’s very warm and receptive here. And it’s wonderful that it’s exclusively dedicated to health care, which makes it more interesting and fascinating to me. It’s so much more people-oriented, too. I came from other industries, such as insurance and accounting, and I’ve found that the people aspect can easily get lost. In health care, it’s always about people and our patients. Everything that you do in HR also affects your patients. We have to retain and recruit the best talent to ensure the best care.

What has been the most impactful part of conference?
Debbi Fields was a great speaker. She really spoke from the heart and tied in understanding what your passion is and not sacrificing quality. When I look at that and compare that to the health care industry, it’s all about quality and patient care. So you can take a lot of what she said and transfer that to how we can be better HR professionals.

What have you found to be really helpful thus far?
I’ve also had the opportunity to look in the Resource Center and found a great DVD. It’s about creating a Wow Environment for our employees. I purchased the DVD because, as a HR director and the leader of my team, I’m always saying that we want to wow our clients, which are our internal stakeholders. I’m very excited that there’s a DVD and something that I can listen to – something that will help deliver the right environment for our clients.
