Yesterday’s AHA PAC Networking Lunch
Pre-conference attendees attended yesterday’s networking lunch to learn more about the AHA PAC and how they can get better involved and have a strong voice when it comes to decisions on the Hill. It was emphasized that every ASHHRA member get involved with working with their state hospital association PACs, to follow their congressmen on Twitter (how many times are they tweeting about health care? Not enough, we bet), contribute to the AHA PAC and get out there and VOTE.

With this being a mid-term election year, it’s important that we voice our opinions and vote – doesn’t matter for whom, but to just be sure we’re involved in the process to make an impact.

Yesterday's Session on the Introduction to CHHR Certification
Yesterday attendees had the opportunity to attend an introduction to the CHHR Certification session. The class, presented by Gary Pastore, MSL, CHHR, of Scottsdale Healthcare, shared practical tips on how to study and prepare for the exam. Pastore covered the HR leader model and discussed how the separate elements of the exam tie back to the five core categories (HR Delivery, Healthcare Business Knowledge, Community Citizenship, People Strategies and Personal Leadership). Each in attendance received a free copy of the CHHR Examination Preparation Guide.

Pastore’s biggest piece of advice was for test-takers to collect free resources that tie into the five categories, most notably the ASHHRA quarterly magazine, HR Pulse. Each article in the magazine is distinctively tied to one of the five core categories. He also said to create a cohort that can help you study and contribute to those areas that you may not be as strong in. And very importantly, self-assess appropriately; don't focus a lot of your time on those areas in which you're already an expert.

Be on the lookout for a new exam guide, coming November 1, which will include actual practice questions. This version of the exam guide will give test takers a greater understanding of the types of questions and will serve as a valuable resource to those hoping to become certified in healthcare human resources.

and
Shawn Parker, Covenant Woods, Mechanicsville, VA

What are you looking forward to most while you’re here?
Nguyen-Le: I’m looking forward to listening to some of the new research available and where the information is coming from.

Parker: I’m most looking forward to the classes – to learn as much as I can to take back to my organization. I want to soak up the knowledge so I can help others in my profession.

What do you want to learn about most or are most interested in during conference?
Nguyen-Le: The performance management and talent management sessions I’m interested in most. I’m looking forward to attending those.

Parker: There’s one particular class tomorrow [People Count! Never Underestimate the Value of Your Employees, 1 – 2:30 p.m.] about the importance of our people. I’m looking forward to it because it goes along with my mentality of ‘we’re only as good as our employees’ and how important they are to our organization.
