Conference Highlights
Welcome to the Last Full Day!
Today starts off with the motivational breakfast and panel discussion featuring President and CEO of the American Hospital Association Richard J. Umbdenstock, FACHE. There are numerous opportunities for breakout learning sessions, and one last chance to connect with our amazing exhibitors. Enjoy tonight with friends and colleagues exploring our wonderful nation’s capital.

Sunday’s Opening Ceremony
ASHHRA Board President Grace Blair Moffitt, VP, Corporate Human Resources, Cone Health, took the stage reminding us all of the conference theme and ensuring our workforce mirrors patient populations and the real reason to be intentional through inclusion.

ASHHRA Senior Executive Director Stephanie Drake addressed the audience and announced a number of ASHHRA initiatives and conference activities, among one being the pedometer challenge. The attendee with the most steps at the end of the conference will be awarded conference registration for 2014.

Sponsored by Cigna, keynote speaker Byron Pitts, an award-winning journalist and news industry veteran with over 20 years of experience, took the stage and emphasized holding onto dreams and being a big believer. He stated, "If your dream only includes you, then your dream isn’t big enough."

He’s interviewed the past six presidents, traveled to nearly 50 countries, and was a first-hand witness of the World Trade Center attacks. He said that he’s made a living covering tragedy and death. Although he stated he has found peace covering devastating events, he said that more than anything, he’s not OK with indifference. He asked for us to not be indifferent about making an impact on people’s lives.

He encouraged the audience to "step out on nothing" for those whom we don’t even know, to make a difference, and to change lives and make them better. He said that by identifying our own struggles that we’ll be better equipped to identify the struggles in the lives of others. In the end, he closed with encouraging us to share our grace, use our leadership, and step out on nothing to make a difference.

Katy Reeves
Vice President Human Resources
Fauquier Hospital
Warrenton, Va.

I began my professional career as a teacher, and my husband was career military, so it was difficult to keep a teaching job because we moved quite often. I had a friend who loved her job and I found out that she was in the health care HR profession, and that’s really how I fell into the industry. I started out working in long-term care, and about nine years ago transitioned over to the hospital setting. I’ve been in health care HR for about 20 years now.

I’m the president-elect of the Virginia state chapter of ASHHRA (VSHHRA), and it’s been a great experience working with other leaders from around the state. It’s been a wonderful way to network and learn new things and approaches without having to reinvent the wheel. What I’m most looking forward to in my upcoming role as president is mentoring those who are new to the profession and to help them find the same professional satisfaction that I’ve found in my career.

I feel I most impact our organization by realizing that although I don’t touch patients, I touch the people who touch those who are at one of the lowest moments in their lives. Medical conditions cause you to question a lot about your life. HR helps select those who are going to work with the patients and help develop their skill sets. If I have a staff member who is worried about their pay, benefits, or getting along with other coworkers—I know that impacts how they’ll take care of the patient.

Health care reform is not only a challenge from the standpoint of being a health care organization, but being an employer and the impact that it has on staff as well. Being able to help navigate the organization and employees through health care reform is huge. Looking down the road, what keeps me up at night is making sure we have qualified, competent, and sufficient members of staff who are able to do what we need to do to care for our community.

As health care HR becomes more and more complex, I’ve found that ASHHRA is an organization that I believe helps me do my job better. What I find about its conferences, and the reason why I come back every year, is that ASHHRA keeps it fresh, is up on the latest, and truly helps me be better at what I do.

The most impactful moment thus far for me ties into today’s keynote speaker’s message—it’s the huge personal impact that I can have on staff members every single day. It’s that one-on-one interaction and reminding them that what they do can make such a difference in the lives of our patients.
