This March, I had the privilege of traveling with fellow Rotarians, construction professionals, and engineering students to the Highlands of Guatemala in celebration of Water Sanitation and Hygiene Month. Our mission was to witness and support the ongoing work that’s bringing safe, affordable drinking water to rural communities. We visited six active projects, and as a veteran construction professional, I was truly impressed, not only by the quality of the work, but by the powerful partnerships driving each initiative forward. Each project involves:
In addition, our very own engineering students from Milwaukee School of Engineering and Marquette University contribute to the design, planning, and construction of these projects. The current projects are valued at over $766,000 and will impact 1,000 homes and more than 5,000 individuals. Since 2010, Rotarians have invested over $1 million in community projects in Guatemala, successfully completing 20 projects that include water systems, pedestrian bridges, and schools. This work is about more than just construction—it's about creating sustainable, life-changing infrastructure and building bridges between communities and cultures. AGC EDGE is live, virtual, instructor-led courses that focus on project management, best practices in supervising teams, Lean construction, and BIM program planning, and job-skills-focused workshops. These courses and workshops are written for contractors, by contractors, and taught by contractors, so whether you are a general contractor or specialty contractor focusing on horizontal or vertical projects, these courses speak to your business and help set the level of consistent practices across your organization.
Each curriculum course is offered multiple times each year and those offerings vary in length of class session, time of day and day(s) of the week they are presented, so there is something available for everyone’s schedule and time zone.
