What I have discovered in our treasure box during this holiday season, is the spirit of giving. In the spirit of giving, I would like to share with you a special charitable project that was approved by your executive committee this past quarter. Under the direction of Past-past President Jonathan Haigh, and Past-President David Flanagan, the executive committee has formed a scholarship program in partnership with the Landscape Architecture Foundation.

On November 29th ASLA, the American Institute of Architects, and the National Society of Professional Engineers, joined in sending a letter to leaders of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives expressing concern for the unfair treatment of professional services businesses, including design firms, organized as S Corporations or pass-through businesses in the comprehensive tax reform proposals moving through Congress. If your firm is organized as a pass-through business, use the iAdvocate Network to tell your legislators not to cripple landscape architecture firms with higher, unfair tax burdens.

Vincent Scully is known as one of the great art critics of our times and an inspiration to many landscape architects. Scully helped to establish the historic preservation of our national heritage of built works. "I saw the sacred landscape, the sacred buildings," said Vincent Scully. "I saw the relationship between the two. It changed my life." The experience led to one of Dr. Scully’s most significant books, "The Earth, the Temple, and the Gods: Greek Sacred Architecture" (1962).

During these 2-3-hour plan review sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for a 30-minute review with landscape architects, architects, planners, and interior designers to review housing plans and discuss creative ideas to better meet the needs of today's home buyers and builders. If you or your firm specializes in residential design and community planning, you would be a great fit for the plan reviews. Each Plan Review Session volunteer will receive a complimentary full registration. Please RSVP to Katie Riddle (kriddle@asla.org) to volunteer for a Plan Review Session timeslot.

Volunteers will take part in "Ask a Landscape Architect," where attendees can meet one-on-one with a landscape architecture professional in the ASLA booth (booth S3328 on the EXPO floor) and learn more about the value of working with landscape architects on all types of projects. Volunteers will be needed for 2-4 hour blocks depending on availability. This is an excellent opportunity to network and increase awareness of the value of landscape architecture. As a booth volunteer, you will receive a complimentary exhibit hall pass during the show. To see available dates and times, please see the ASLA Exhibit Booth Volunteers Signup List.
