HALS was created in 2000 to document our country's dynamic cultural landscapes. Each year, the HALS office at the National Park Service issues a challenge, encouraging landscape architects and preservation professionals to document historic landscapes. The theme of the 2014 challenge is Documenting Landscapes of the New Deal.

This year, our statewide Florida ASLA conference will be held at the exclusive Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Fla. We on the conference planning committee are excited about our spectacular venue for this year! Because Ocean Reef, or "The Reef" as the locals call it, is a private "members only" club, many will never get the opportunity to experience the beauty of this development that had humble beginnings as a fishing village in the 1940s, unless they register for and attend! Families and friends are welcome and will have plenty to do for fun and entertainment while on the property. Our conference is going to be filled with lots of quality educational courses for CEC credits for Landscape Architects, Planners and Architects. We are planning several relaxed tours and activities, such as kayaking, snorkeling, mangrove kayak tours, and a day of garden tours of private Ocean Reef gardens designed by Landscape Architects and Designers practicing in the area. There will be recreational opportunities for playing golf on the award winning golf courses, fine dining in many restaurants, shopping in the charming fishing village, or just relaxing beachside or poolside. We will learn and hear a few amazing keynote speakers, but will have plenty of down time this year, so attendees have time and space to enjoy the unique atmosphere of this amazing venue. Our expo is going to be given more prominence this year so that vendors can reach the estimated 500 attendees. We will have lovely cocktail receptions at the end of each day of learning and touring to reconnect and network. Wednesday, March 19, 2 p.m. Join Glenn Herold and Chuck Taylor for a FREE live and on-demand webinar exploring how to reduce your urban stormwater runoff, and improve your water quality through the effective design and maintenance of permeable pavement interlocking concrete paver (PICP) systems. In this webinar, we'll start by outlining the key components, specifications and best management practices in PICP system design, construction and maintenance, as well as outline the main differences between the primary five types of previous pavement surfaces. Within this discussion, we'll also explore how to modify your system design to accommodate changes based on site soil conditions (e.g., sand, silt, and clay). Additionally, Herold and Taylor will tackle the adverse environmental effects of urban runoff and how we can counter these (both in quantity AND quality) with a PICP system. Within our discussion of reducing runoff quantity, we'll demonstrate how to develop a site specific Curve Number based on the system design so you can apply traditional modeling methods. And, in terms of improving water quality, we'll outline the use of different treatment mechanisms that are both intrinsic to, and supplementary of, permeable pavement. Finally, Herold and Taylor will outline the best practices for preventative and remedial maintenance (including costs) to ensure the successful long-term performance of your PICP system.

Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13, 2014 What's Out There Weekend Miami, scheduled for April 12 & 13, will offer tours of lush, tropical flora and landscapes from Palm Beach down to Cutler Bay. Tour highlights include Society of the Four Arts Gardens in Palm Beach, designed by Innocenti & Webel; the work of William Lyman Phillips at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and Greynolds Park in Coral Gables; the Modernist Lincoln Road Mall, originally designed by Morris Lapidus with a significant recent addition by Raymond Jungles; Vizcaya Gardens, designed by Diego Suarez; and approximately 20 other locations. The tours reveal anecdotes and stories about city shaping, landscape architecture and design history. Many are places people pass daily, but do we know their background stories?
