President's Message

Dear FL|ASLA Members:

Hopefully the recent government shutdown is having minimal effect on local LA’s and our ability to continue to practice. It is unfortunate that this should come at such a critical time in our recovery. ASLA has created a preliminary analysis of the impacts of the federal government shutdown on federal programs important to landscape architects. They monitor the situation and provide our members with any critical updates.

As chapter president, I had the pleasure of participating last month as a member of FNGLA’s design awards jury, and I was at the annual plant show in Orlando as a booth judge. I was very impressed with both the design award entries and the quality and effort that exhibitors put into creating their displays. The design awards jury awarded 12 projects, including three special recognition awards. Some of these projects were beautifully designed by FL|ASLA members. The plant show booth jury recognized 14 booths for their efforts, including best of show. One standout in particular for me was the Grandiflora booth – their use of props and a "Duck Dynasty" theme was really creative.

Elections are now closed! The votes are being tallied and the results will be available in the next few days. An announcement will be made in next month’s newsletter. Thank you to all those who stepped up to fill the slate this year, it was a very strong year for FLASLA elections.

The Legislative Priorities Survey is still up and available for you to take. Please click here and complete the survey. This is your opportunity to tell your Government Affairs Committee what issues are important to you. This is the last chance for you to participate in the survey, as it will be closed next month.

Have a spooky Halloween!

Until next month,

Michael Miller, ASLA
FL|ASLA President
