Navy divers have failed to find the seven missing passengers of the ferry M/V Our Lady of Mt. Carmel that sank off Burias Island in Masbate Friday with 70 people on board. Sixty-one of those on board have been rescued, 39 of them passengers and 22 crew members, officials said. The bodies of two fatalities have been recovered. Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Gerald Fabic told reporters the seven missing could have been trapped inside the sunken vessel. There’s a slim chance that they had drifted to nearby islands, Fabic said.

The RAN diving branch of the Australian Defence Force is an elite group of specialist divers who are trained to perform a number of dangerous tasks including explosive ordnance disposal or as Commander Bell describes it, being able combine his love of the sea with the exhilaration of taking bombs apart.

Beckerman, who is wrapping up his junior year at West Morris Mendham High School, said he has been inventing and building things, from tree forts to remote controlled vehicles to a wave runner, since he was just 2 years old. One area of responsibility the team has is the fast-running South Saskatchewan River. Due to the extremely low visibility, they needed a better tool to locate drowning victims and other underwater targets. The very shallow water and type of survey lent itself to the Hummingbird 1198 side imaging sonar, which was purchased through private donations and matching city funds. The team knew without training, their ability to successfully locate drowning victims wouldn't be nearly effective as it could be.
