INTERNATIONAL NEWS
David Harner pulled on a fitted Lycra outfit with thin tubes snaking around his body carrying cold water and attached pencil-thin monitoring devices to his thighs, biceps, chest and back. Co-workers helped him into a red rubber suit and a helmet attached to an oxygen line. Harner then lowered himself into a pool of warm water that had the faint, distant blue glow of fuel rods.

Objective: The effect of viewpoint on the navigation of complex terrain and on spatial awareness was examined with the use of a simulated remotely operated vehicle.
Background: The ability to build terrain models in real time may soon allow remote vehicular control from any viewpoint. A virtual tether couples the viewpoint to the vehicle’s position and orientation, but shows more of the terrain than a fully immersive egocentric display. In this sense, it provides visual momentum by providing a view that incorporates egocentric and exocentric qualities.

Each year hundreds of recreational divers will make the decision to become commercial divers. Most will start their careers by attending a commercial diving school. For this reason, recreational divers should know what diving schools teach. Also, they should be aware of future trends in diving technology. Divers should know both the kinds of jobs and the equipment they might have to use. Schools should be evaluated to see if they have the technology equal to that of the present and possible future. For informed divers the transition from recreational to commercial will be successful.

The exhibit will give visitors the opportunity to explore a simulated environment of the deep-sea canyon using a camera-fitted, remote-operated, underwater robot, said Lisa Uttal, a member of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center. The remote-operated vehicle will take real-time video of the exhibit's replica ecosystem, which will include deep-sea dwelling sponges, corals, crabs, fish and invertebrates. The remote-operated vehicle will put visitors in the pilot seat of a deep sea submersible cruising the canyon 50 miles off Santa Cruz's shore and 4,000 meters down.
