The U.S. rig count continued to decline in early August as eight oil and gas rigs were dropped, according to weekly data from Baker Hughes, a GE company. Six oil rigs and two gas rigs were shed, bringing the total number of active rigs to 934, which is 123 fewer than a year ago. Alaska shed four rigs, while Louisiana and Oklahoma dropped two rigs apiece and Kansas and Texas dropped one each. New Mexico was the only state to add rigs, tacking on two.
Clough USA said Monday it has won a $620 million engineering, procurement and construction contract for an unspecified U.S. petrochemicals project. In a written statement, the U.S. unit of the Australia-based engineering and construction firm said it has secured a limited notice to proceed with the project. Clough USA added that it anticipates the full notice to proceed in October. The EPC contract recipient offered few details about the project, only providing the contract value and stating that it is “in the U.S. market.”
Houston-based Sanchez Energy Corp. has filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, the company announced Sunday. The decision comes after Sanchez sought advice from a restructuring firm in December to explore strategic alternatives. Sanchez Energy said it has received commitments for $175 million in new financing, including $25 million to repay borrowings and replace a letter of credit that is outstanding.

This award is available for any institution of higher learning after high school including universities, colleges, junior colleges, vocational training schools and trade schools.

Heerema Marine Contractors has secured a foundation installation contract from Ørsted for the 900MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms in Taiwan. The projects consist of four sites in the Taiwan Strait. Danish Heerema’s contract scope includes the transport and installation of 111 turbine foundations as well as the installation of two large offshore substations.
A new study from Australian National University shows the impact phosphate mining is having on coral reefs.The study looked at coral reefs around Christmas Island, where there’s been extensive phosphate mining for around 100 years. Lead researcher Dr. Jennie Mallela said in areas near the island’s mining "hot spots," the reef showed high levels of pollution, leading to a slowdown in reef growth and diversity.
Stena Bulk's chief executive and president, Erik Hanell, wrote to India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, in an effort to help secure the release of the UK-flagged tanker ship Stena Impero and its primarily Indian crew members, who have been detained in Iran since mid-July. According to media reports, the owner of the Stena Impero, which was seized by Iran on July 19 with 23 crew aboard, including 18 Indians, has appealed to Modi to negotiate personally with Tehran.

Saipem-Sonsub recently launched its Hydrone-R underwater intervention drone in water to start the endurance and qualification tests prior to its commercialization by the end of the year. The Hydrone program consists of three vehicles: the Hydrone-R, Hydrone-S and Hydrone-W. Saipem plans a phased commercialization over the next two years.
San Jose, Calif.-based Deep Ocean Engineering has announced the addition of a new ROV to its product line, the Phantom X8. This electric, light work-class vehicle is the largest and most heavy-duty ROV manufactured by DOE and packs a robust design for deep-sea maneuverability and power. Its performance at depths of up to 1,000 meters is adaptable for various underwater tasks in any condition.
The trailing suction hopper dredger Bonny River, built at Royal IHC’s Chinese partner yard COSCO Guangdong Shipyard, was recently delivered to the Belgian dredging company DEME. The TSHD features a number of advanced technologies and is driven by controllable pitch propellers and transverse thrusters from Schottel. With a 15,000-cbm capacity, the vessel is capable of dredging hard soil and working in water depths of more than 100 meters.
