Underwater Bridge Inspection Course Offered at UI 2016

Underwater Bridge Inspection is a stand-alone, four-day course that provides training for divers who require a knowledge base of underwater bridge inspection and evaluation techniques in order to meet the education requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) for underwater bridge inspection training. Collins Engineering developed guidelines, lesson plans and curriculum material to present this course to state DOT personnel and other governmental agency personnel, nationwide.

The course addresses the need for underwater bridge inspections. Additionally, it identifies procedures and types of equipment used; types of underwater defects and conditions contributing to rates of deterioration; collection of data; methods to describe underwater conditions; how to perform thorough underwater inspections; and identification of nondestructive testing techniques. NDE methods discussed in the course include ultrasonics and GPR, as well as various other NDT/PDT techniques.

This course was developed using adult learning techniques and is targeted to the training needs of structural engineers, materials engineers, traffic engineers, field inspectors, construction supervisors, and other technical personnel involved in the inspection, maintenance and repair of the underwater components of bridges. The course also includes a narrated video, produced in accordance with Section 508 guidelines, which presents an overview of underwater bridge inspection guidelines.
