The Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) is actively monitoring for southern pine beetle outbreaks by setting prediction traps throughout the state. Additionally, they are tracking the spread of cogongrass and encouraging landowners and foresters to watch for signs of both species.
  
The Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia (CVIOG) is offering several educational opportunities for county leaders. These programs are specifically designed for local government and will cover a wide range of topics. The Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council (GHRAC) wants to recognize inviduals and organizations that are dedicated to preserving and sharing Georgia's history and making historical records more accessible through its Outstanding Archives Awards Program. The nomination deadline is Saturday, June 1, 2024.

Does your county have an innovative program worthy of national recognition? Submit your outstanding program to be considered for a 2024 NACo Achievement Award. The early bird submission deadline is Friday, February 23, while the regular deadline is Saturday, March 30, 2024. 
An updated Top Cyber Actions for Securing Water Systems fact sheet is now available. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) updated the joint fact sheet with additional resources to support water systems in defending against malicious cyber activity. 
  
Counties can now apply for funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program. Over $1 billion is available in funding for local projects that improve roadway safety.
  
The application window for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) ReConnect Program will open on Friday, March 22, 2024. The program helps rural communities gain access to affordable high-speed internet.
