Georgia State University Law Student, Lizbeth Gomez, Completes Internship with Fayette County State Court

Prior to interning with Fayette County State Court, Lizbeth Gomez, a law student at Georgia State University, had some exposure to county government through her prior experience with county agencies. However, during her time with the Court, Gomez was afforded an opportunity to learn from an insider’s perspective on how state court judges make decisions and take the arguments of the parties and root the decision in case precedence.

Over the course of her internship, Gomez’s primary responsibilities’ consisted of legal research and drafting judicial orders. Her most significant success was drafting an order that was signed with minimal edits. Her favorite part of the internship experience was learning from the judge’s staff.  Through her work, she gained better legal writing skills and extensive knowledge of criminal law principles.

To future interns, Gomez advises her peers to be prepared and to work hard. When asked if there was a career in county government for Gomez in the future, she answered "yes," that she would consider a career as a staff attorney. She hopes to practice criminal defense in the future, and she knows the experience she gained from this internship will be extremely helpful and assist her in meeting future career goals.

An internship opportunity with Fayette County State Court is available through GCIP for the 2019 summer session. All applicants should apply directly to Marie Wilcox at mwilcox@fayettecountyga.gov.
