It’s wildfire season, and despite spotty rainfall, Georgia Forestry Commission wildland firefighters have been busy. So far this fiscal year (since July 1, 2025), Georgia has had 2,850 wildfires, which claimed 15,711 acres. That’s 87% above our five-year average for number of fires and 116% above for acreage burned. The outlook still shows a busy fire season into at least May for southeast Georgia.
This is also the time when, in the hands of trained practitioners, fire can be used to enhance the health of our forestlands. Prescribed fires reduce hazardous fuels to lower the intensity of possible wildfires. They follow detailed prescriptions – including weather, fuel, smoke, and safety conditions to help restore and maintain healthy forest ecosystems. Prescribed fires return nutrients to the soil and support the habitat needs of many wildlife species.
For all of us, this is a time to be very cautious with fire. Most of the state is behind on precipitation. Warmer weather, plus low moisture/relative humidity and windy days, sets the stage for wildfire conditions. Whether you’re a prescribed fire practitioner or a back yard burner, if your fire has moved outside its planned area, don’t attempt to suppress the fire yourself. Call 911 immediately.
