DCA Jurisdictional Population Estimates Update

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

In accordance with state law. the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) publishes annual population estimates for all municipal, county, and consolidated governments in the state. The data presented in this annual publication are based on annual estimates generated by the United States Census Bureau (SUB-IP-EST-2019-ANNRES-13).

Following the 2020 Decennial Census, updated jurisdiction-level data for all of Georgia’s local governments is not expected to be release by the U.S. Census Bureau until December 2021. While there are staggered release dates for various geographies, DCA does not publish population data for a time period until it is made available for all 689 cities, counties, and consolidated governments.

As a result of this delayed data release, DCA will continue to utilize 2019 Population Estimates (available at https://www.dca.ga.gov/node/2670) for all programs, designations, and other functions for which jurisdiction population is a metric. Use of these 2019 U.S. Census Bureau estimates will continue until such time as 2020 population data is available for all municipal, county, and consolidated governments in Georgia.

Additional information on the 2020 Census Data Release Schedule can be found at https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/news/data-releases/2020/release-schedule.html.
