2020 Census Update

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

The collection period for the 2020 Census ended on October 15, 2020, but the preparation, analysis, and review of the census results are ongoing. By law, the Census Bureau is required to provide the President with reapportionment census data by December 31 and redistricting data to the states by March 30. However, due to operational setbacks related to COVID-19, the Census Bureau recently announced that reapportionment data will not be made available until April 30 and that redistricting data will not be distributed until the end of July. These timelines are fluid and are subject to change. ACCG will continue to monitor this issue and will update counties as additional information is provided.

The Census Bureau is distributing 2020 Census geographic support files to states in January and February. Georgia is scheduled to receive these files on or by February 17, 2021. These files include newly created 2020 Census blocks and updated block groups, census tracts, voting districts, and current boundaries for governments and school districts referenced to January 1, 2020. Each state’s package will include shapefiles, maps, block assignment files, and name lookup tables. These products are provided to support redistricting efforts by state and local governments. More information about this release can be found here.
