A Safety Culture Prevents Injuries & Saves Counties Money

Print Print this article

People are often surprised when accidents happen, but in reality, many are preventable! To reduce the likelihood of accidents, county leaders should create a safety culture by encouraging safe behaviors and implementing practices and policies throughout the organization that help reduce the risk of injuries.

Members of the ACCG Insurance Programs have access to loss control assistance through Local Government Risk Management Services (LGRMS) at no additional charge. These loss control experts can help the counties in their efforts to have a strong safety program to protect the health and welfare of the county employees, volunteers, citizens and others that interact with the county government. Having a safety culture also helps the county improve its reputational risk, earning it a positive image to its employees, constituents, current and potential industries, and others who are interested its operations. Contact LGRMS if needed by calling 678-686-6279 or 800-650-3120 or visiting www.lgrms.com.

By having a safer workplace, counties belonging to the ACCG Workers’ Compensation Fund (ACCG-GSIWCF) and/or the ACCG Property & Liability Fund (ACCG-IRMA) can also earn significant discounts on their premiums if they participate in the Safety Discount Program. They can save 7.5 percent and 5 percent respectively on their renewal premiums when they meet the requirements of the program. Members who earn the Workers’ Compensation Safety Discount in 2021 are also eligible to apply for and receive a portion of the $500,000 in Safety Grants in 2021. (Look out for more info on the 2020 Safety Grants in the April issue of the CountyLine!)

The requirements to be met in 2020 for the 2021 renewals are outlined in the 2021 Safety Discount Program Workbook. Workbooks have been mailed out to the member county chairmen, county managers/administrators, insurance contacts and safety coordinators. The workbook is also online at www.accginsurance.org. The first page highlights the updates from last year..
