The Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP) seeks to connect college students with internships in county government. There are four different types of county internship grant opportunities available for the 2020 summer grant period: 1) the general GCIP, which is open to all counties 2) a special Verizon-sponsored grant opportunity for counties with a population of 55,000 or less that have not previously participated in the GCIP, 3) the Joan Garner Health and Human Services Internship Grant and 4) the Dr. Jim Kundell Environmental Management Internship Grant. In addition to having new categories of grants available, the hourly salary for interns has been increased from $10/hour to $12/hour, which is covered through the grant funding.

All internships are funded through ACCG Civic Affairs Foundation from donations, corporate sponsorships, and grants. Since GCIP was created in 2010, 425 internships in 74 counties have been provided. A wide range of county projects in diverse departments have been completed through GCIP including web site development and enhancement, social media campaigns, public safety campaigns, budget projects, GIS projects, IT projects, finance and accounting projects, art installations, the update and creation of county policies, guidelines, training manuals, procedures, and ordinances, legal intern projects, comprehensive planning and service delivery projects, asset depreciation, records managment, economic development projects, and senior services projects.

The deadline to submit grant applications is January 6, 2020. Grant recipients will be announced by February 15, 2020. The grant package and application is available on the ACCG Civic Affairs Foundation website at https://www.accg.org/caf_countyinfo.php. If you have any questions about the grant process, please contact Michele NeSmith at mnesmith@accg.org or at 404-522-5022.
