Event Countdown

The Port of Virginia

The Port of Virginia is proud to host the 108th AAPA Convention, the largest port event in the Americas, which gathers hundreds of major stakeholders and leaders in the industry from around the world.  The Port of Virginia is comprised of four marine terminals, two intermodal container transfer facilities, and a barge terminal. It has on-dock, double-stack rail served by two Class One rail lines, Norfolk Southern and CSX. The Port of Virginia is located within one day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population. The Port of Virginia regularly serves vessels in excess of 14,000 TEUs and is mid-way through a $695 million expansion project that will increase annual container capacity by 40 percent by 2020. The Port of Virginia has 50’ deep channels and recently received approval to deepen its channels to 55’ and widen to 1,300’.

Virginia’s ports have been a boon to Virginia and the world for nearly four centuries. From the early founding as “America’s First Port” at Jamestown in 1607 through the era of the great clipper ships to the present day sophistication of computerized intermodal technology, Virginia has been at the forefront of every major change in the shipping industry.

About the Convention

The Convention and Expo is AAPA’s largest membership meeting of the year. Held every fall in a different port city, the convention includes technical and policy committee meetings, business sessions and social events allowing port professionals and stakeholders in the marine transportation industry to exchange views and expand business contacts. After several years, this event returns to Norfolk, Virginia to discuss the main port projects, enjoy social networking opportunities and generate business contacts in a commercial display.
