New Simplified Battery Management Plan from GTS: IMTs

THE PROBLEM

Knowing how to identify bad batteries and removing them for recycling is a constant problem for mobile device users.

All batteries look alike regardless of their age. Replace them too soon and you are wasting money. Replace them too late and you will have device failure and downtime (approx. one hour of labor per incident).

Most industry experts agree that battery packs should be replaced on approximately the following schedule:

  • Mission critical public safety and military: 12-14 months
  • Critical delivery: 18-24 months
  • Busy retail: 18-24 months
  • High intensity warehouse distribution: 18-24 months
  • Low intensity warehouse and distribution: 24-36 months

These are rough guidelines, but after 18 months, batteries should be monitored or moved into lower intensity applications.

THE SOLUTION

GTS has developed Inventory Management “Tags” (IMTs) to provide a simple way for its customers to manage their battery inventories, cut costs, and get increased productivity from their mobile devices.

  • GTS places a small, permanent, colored label on each IMT battery.
  • The color denotes the year in which the battery is put into service. YELLOW is the color for 2020, while BLUE is the color for 2021.
  • The label also has a number on it that indicates the quarter of the year when the battery is put into service.
  • For example, batteries shipped in Q1, 2020 have YELLOW IMTs with the number “1” on them, batteries shipped in Q2, 2021 have BLUE IMTs with the number “2” on them.

Now GTS customers will know which batteries to remove and recycle when ordering replacement batteries. When customers chose to use GTS’s Test & Replace & Recycle technology, they will save time by testing only the oldest batteries in their inventories.
