Building Supply Update
ABSDA Updates

The Canadian Retail Building Supply Council (CRBSC) recognized the opportunity to transform our highly successful Estimating Fundamentals workshop to an online format to address several issues: the cost of travel from remote locations; valuable time spent away from the store and offering a learning experience for those staff already engaged in the internet.

The Estimating Fundamental Online program is a collaboration of the Canadian Retail Building Supply Council (CRBSC) made up of the Building Supply Industry Association of BC (BSIA), the Western Retail Lumber Association (WRLA), The Lumber and Building Materials Association of Ontario (LBMAO), the Quebec Hardware and Building Supply Association (AQMAT) and the Atlantic Building Supply Dealers Association (ABSDA).  Under the direction of the CRBSC, Stan Burkholder, a well-respected CRBSC and industry facilitator, has worked with one of Canada’s leading developers of on-line programming to translate the two-day classroom CRBSC Manual Estimating Fundamentals Course to this online platform. Our vision is for the online course to match in intensity and relevance with what the classroom course provides.

We have eliminated the time and cost to travel to a learning center to participate in the traditional 2-day Estimating Fundamentals Workshop. While containing the same information as the workshop, this new platform delivers a learning experience lasting approximately 8 hours that is accessible anywhere, anytime from a desktop, laptop or tablet.

This course is ideally suited to any building supply retail staff member either directly or indirectly involved in the estimating process for decks, sheds or garages.

Module 1: The Sales Process

Module 2: The Deck Estimate

Module 3: The Garage Estimate Part 1

Module 4: The Garage Estimate Part 2

Deck Exam

Garage Exam

The modules and exams should take no longer than 8 hours to complete once you sign in and pay there is no time limit.  The cost of this online program is $425. Plus HSTTo register for this online program click on the link below:

On Friday, June 2, Fenestration Canada honoured Kevin Pelley, P.Eng and President of Kohltech Windows and Entrance Systems, with the C.P. Loewen Award at its Annual General Meeting in Halifax.

Fenestration Canada is the national association of window and door manufacturers, vendors and other stakeholders, focused on providing education, technical and regulatory resources. The C.P. Loewen Award is the most prestigious award in the window and door industry and is presented to an individual in recognition of their dedication, accomplishment and service to the industry.

Pelley has served on the Fenestration Canada Board of Directors for 13 years, including time spent as President, Past President and most recently Treasurer. With an engineering degree from Halifax’s Dalhousie University and an MBA from Saint Mary’s University, Pelley is only the 3rd Atlantic Canadian to receive this prestigious award. He has been instrumental in carving out the future of Fenestration Canada and has led Kohltech from its Debert, Nova Scotia roots to a world class organization across Canada and the US, with manufacturing facilities in Nova Scotia and Alberta.

The award is named after Fenestration Canada Past President C.P. Loewen, who played a key role in the development of the association and the advancement and sophistication of the window and door industry. He was an influential and respected man in many fields including industry, trade and business associations, labour government, church and the community. Kohltech (formerly Kohler Windows) founder Peter Kohler is a past winner of the award.

In recent months everyone has been made aware of the terrible flooding occurring in Quebec. Taiga has two branches in this province, located in Boucherville and St. Augustin, so this directly affects not only their customers and partners, but also their staff and families. As of late last week the floods had impacted over 173 municipalities and 4,500 houses. There were more than 3,000 evacuees and 126 landslides reported.

Taiga has donated $20,000.00 to the Croix Rouge efforts. When the disastrous fires occurred in Fort McMurray last year, Taiga supported Alberta in a similar fashion, giving to the Red Cross who
we believe are tremendously responsive in dealing with such adversities. Canadians come together at times like these and we are hopeful this helps in some small way. They are proud to have such a community-oriented team in Quebec and across Canada. Below is a photo of part their Taiga Quebec team with Red Cross Coordinator, Alexandre Normandin.
