The Port of Olympia serves the Washington state capital region from an asset base that includes a marine terminal, the NewMarket Industrial Campus, Swantown Marina and Boatworks, Foreign Trade Zone #216 and Olympia Regional Airport. The 66-acre marine terminal consists of a breakbulk/container yard, a U.S. Customs bonded warehouse, on-dock rail and three modern, deepwater berths.

The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay has filled vacant senior staff positions and added personnel to assist in project organization, management and implementation. John Loftus was recently appointed executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority. Les Reardanz will succeed John Mohr as chief executive officer of the Port of Everett. The Maryland Port Administration has hired Samantha Harris as building manager for World Trade Center Baltimore.

Port of Kalama has moved two steps closer to the construction of a two-phase, $1.8 billion plant that will manufacture methanol for export to overseas markets. Pembina Pipeline Corporation is planning to invest more than a half billion dollars in a rail-served propane export facility to be sited in the Port of Portland’s Rivergate District.

A senior APM Terminals executive warns that Latin America needs more investment in port and transportation infrastructure to keep pace with the needs of its growing population. Global terminal operator Grup TCB has begun building a container facility at Guatemala’s Pacific coast port of Puerto Quetzal that will be capable of handling the largest vessels served by the expanded Panama Canal. The North Carolina State Ports Authority has contracted with ContainerPort Group, Inc., to provide service at the Charlotte Inland Terminal (CIT).

Port of Long Beach
More than 20 million tons of cargo moved through the St. Lawrence Seaway from March 28 to August 31, an increase of 3.0 percent from a year ago, according to data reported by the U.S. St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLDC).  U.S. grain entered the plus column for the first time this season with 13.3 percent jump in cargo tonnage.

The Maryland Port Administration (MPA) recently was recognized twice for environmental initiatives.The first was a successful recertification audit of the MPA’s Environmental Management System (EMS) by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001. The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved a $469,000 grant award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to retrofit cargo handling equipment used at the Port of Los Angeles. Funded through the federal agency’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) program, the grant was secured by the port on behalf of its tenants SA Recycling and APM Terminals.

The Massachusetts Port Authority’s public website, www.Massport.com, now includes a series of webpages that focus on the agency’s preparedness efforts ford both man-made threats and natural events, such as increased storm and flood intensity as well as sea level rise. Since 1999, Massport has been working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to help mitigate climate change.
