The Brazilian port sector handled some 460,2 million metric tons of cargo during the first six months of 2014, an increase from a year ago of nearly 5.8 percent, according to data reported by Agência Nacional de Transportes Aquaviários. The Port of Longview is on track to a second consecutive record year, with second quarter and first half 2014 cargo volumes exceeding prior year levels by 17 and 4 percent, respectively. The Port of Virginia slashed its operating loss for FY 2014 to $17.1 million from the $23.4 million loss it had projected in January.

In a speech to the Association of Port Canadian Port Authorities, Federal Transport Minister Lisa Raitt announced changes that will allow all Canada port authorities to enter into long-term lease agreements and use the lands they manage to generate increased revenues to support future port plans. The board of commissioners of the Port of New Orleans has awarded a $13.3 million contract for the construction of the Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal improvement project.

The Port of Adak, a recently decommissioned U.S. Navy base centrally located in the Aleutian Islands, is served by a protected deep-water and ice-free harbor. It was acquired by The Aleut Corporation, an Alaskan Native Corporation and includes substantial port and support building infrastructure, which is being incorporated into a development strategy for a large scale commercial port.

The Association of Canadian Port Authorities welcomed a new officers and board members for 2014-2015 during its recently concluded annual conference in Bathurst, New Brunswick. John Y. Chun, P.E., has been appointed Director of Engineering Design for the Port of Long Beach. Glenn Cooke and Kathryn Craig are the newest members of the board of directors of the Saint John Port Authority.

Evergreen Line began direct calls at the Port of Boston for the first time in nearly 30 years with the August 20 docking of Ital Lunare at Massport’s Conley Terminal.
