Import volume at major U.S. container ports is expected to hit an all-time record in August as retailers concerned about the lack of a West Coast longshoremen's contract rush to bring holiday season merchandise into the country, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report. The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reports throughput at its Garden City Container Terminal in Savannah set a monthly record in July of 293,889 TEUs. The San Pedro Harbor ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles together handled container volumes totaling just over 1.3 million TEUs in June, an increase of 1.1 percent from a year ago.

The first structural components for construction of Austrian steel-maker voestalpine, Texas $750 million manufacturing facility arrived August 19 at Port Corpus Christi’s cargo dock 9 on board the MV BBC Zarate. The Port of Everett has signed one new lease and renewed three additional leases to bring to 70 percent the occupancy of the Waterfront Center, a port-owned facility housing marine-related businesses and retailers. Northwest Innovation Works and Williams’ Northwest Pipeline have signed a pre-construction agreement for a 3.1-mile pipeline lateral to feed natural gas to the $1.8 billion NWIW methanol production facility planned for the Port of Kalama.

On July 31, the Greater Lafourche Port Commission (GLPC) officially opened an emergency operations center, which serves as a base for incident response during emergencies impacting the Port Fourchon area and offshore oil and gas operations.  The government of Nicaragua is moving forward with an investment program targeted at infrastructure enhancements and construction at ports and tourist centers administered by the national port agency, Empresa Portuaria Nacional (EPN).

Oxnard Harbor Commissioners are adamantly opposing Measure M, a ballot initiative that would impose a city business license tax increase targeted at businesses operating at the Port of Hueneme and Naval Base Ventura County. San Diego’s Board of Port Commissioners has amended the port’s Cost Recovery Policy and User Fee Schedule as part of continuing efforts to refine the recently adopted program, implement efficiencies and facilitate a better user experience.

Port Corpus Christi completed an annual surveillance audit of its Environmental Management System (EMS) in July. The audit found no major non-conformances and accordingly the ISO 14001 certification has been continued for another year.
