June was an active month for cargo moving to and from U.S. Great Lakes ports via the St. Lawrence Seaway, with tonnage increases for containerized cargo, aluminum, steel and U.S. grain exports to Europe, according to the U.S. Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. The San Pedro Harbor ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles together handled container volumes totaling just over 1.3 million TEUs in June, down 1.9 percent from the preceding month and 3.1 percent compared to June 2014. International container volumes through the Puget Sound gateway ports of Seattle and Tacoma jumped 14.3 percent in June from a year ago, with the total count, including domestic container movements, up 7.5 percent to 344,573 TEUs.

The Port of Everett Commission earlier this month awarded a $5.2 million contract for completion of the second phase of its Central Marina Improvements project. These permitted marina improvements are part of the port’s phased plan to renovate its marina facilities during the next 30 years. The Port Authority of Guam (PAG) will use a $2 million U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Community Facility Direct Loan to fund the acquisition of yard tractors, forklifts and yard maintenance equipment. With the anticipated completion this fall of the $50 million port modernization project administered by Maritime Administration, the port authority will have received $74 million in upgrades and improvements.
