Construction is set to begin this September on a new cruise terminal at the Port of Valparaiso. Plans call for completion of the $7 million project within a year, in time for the 2016-17 cruise season.

Port of Long Beach
The Alabama State Port Authority, in partnership with the state’s environmental agency, will use a federal DERA grant to retrofit four locomotives with idling control systems to cut diesel fuel emissions. A newly released Port of Los Angeles draft white paper on zero emission technology details the port’s testing of zero emissions technology to date and its proposed near-term plan for encouraging zero emission technology use in maritime goods movement, particularly as it relates to drayage trucks and yard tractors. Port Metro Vancouver has revised its project and environmental review process with the stated objectives of "more effectively guiding applicants through the permitting process and providing greater clarity, efficiency, transparency and access to information."

Kathryn "Kate" Ferguson joined the Duluth Seaway Port Authority July 13 as director of business development. Noelia Rodriguez, former chief communications officer for Metro Los Angeles, is now managing director of communications at the Port of Long Beach. Retired investment banker Earl Hamlin has been elected president of the Port of Oakland Board of Port Commissioners. The Port of Portland has named Craig Funk chief of airport fire and rescue, and Jason Wallis the chief of the port police department.

June was an active month for cargo moving to and from U.S. Great Lakes ports via the St. Lawrence Seaway, with tonnage increases for containerized cargo, aluminum, steel and U.S. grain exports to Europe, according to the U.S. Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. The San Pedro Harbor ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles together handled container volumes totaling just over 1.3 million TEUs in June, down 1.9 percent from the preceding month and 3.1 percent compared to June 2014. International container volumes through the Puget Sound gateway ports of Seattle and Tacoma  jumped 14.3 percent in June from a year ago, with the total count, including domestic container movements, up 7.5 percent to 344,573 TEUs.

Yardi Systems, Inc.

The Port of Everett Commission earlier this month awarded a $5.2 million contract for completion of the second phase of its Central Marina Improvements project. These permitted marina improvements are part of the port’s phased plan to renovate its marina facilities during the next 30 years. The Port Authority of Guam (PAG) will use a $2 million U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Community Facility Direct Loan to fund the acquisition of yard tractors, forklifts and yard maintenance equipment. With the anticipated completion this fall of the $50 million port modernization project administered by Maritime Administration, the port authority will have received $74 million in upgrades and improvements.
