Congressman Scott Peters to Deliver Keynote at AAPA Security Seminar

Congressman Scott Peters (D-CA) will be a featured speaker at AAPA’s forthcoming Port Security Seminar & Exhibition.

Congressman Peters, whose district includes San Diego, sits of the House Armed Services and Judiciary Committees. He is also a former San Diego port commissioner.

Port Statistics: Baltimore, Saint John

Two East Coast ports report significant cargo growth.

March general cargo tonnage and container box movements set monthly records at the Port of Baltimore, beating prior year totals by 14 percent and 49 percent, respectively. The data, as reported by the Maryland Port Administration, show general cargo up 14 percent from a year ago to 913,136 short tons. The 49,971 containers (77,772 TEUs) exceeded last year’s count by 49 percent.
Port Saint John’s annual meeting on May 28 highlighted strategic business growth, community commitment and the port’s contribution to the economy of New Brunswick. Among other things, Port Saint John reported hefty increases in cruise terminal venue rentals, container movements and dry bulk cargo as well as net income from operations of nearly C$1.7 million in fiscal 2014.

Shipping Services: Baltimore, Philadelphia

Additional vessels from Europe and Central and South America will soon be calling at two mid-Atlantic ports.

French ocean container carrier CMA CGM will soon be calling the Port of Baltimore’s Seagirt Marine Terminal as part of its Liberty Solo service between North Europe and the U.S. East Coast. The Port of Baltimore will be one of five calls in the rotation.
Holt Logistics Corp. has finalized separate, but related business agreements that will bring additional vessel calls and Latin American trading connections to Packer Avenue Marine Terminal in the Port of Philadelphia.

Facility Development: Duluth

A May 27 groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction of the Port of Duluth Intermodal Project – the largest infrastructure project undertaken by the Duluth Seaway Port Authority since the 1950s. The rebuild and expansion of Dock C&D will put a vacant, underutilized dock back into maritime service after more than 20 years.

Partnerships: Tampa

Port Tampa Bay and the University of South Florida will be sharing data and personnel to conduct key research initiatives under the terms of a recently signed memorandum of understanding. The port and USF have enjoyed a decades-long relationship that is now reaching a higher level of collaboration.

Navigation: Grays Harbor

Port of Grays Harbor commissioners and staff celebrated a pivotal event on May 26 with the signing of a Project Partnership Agreement for the Grays Harbor Navigation Improvement Project at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Seattle District Headquarters. Construction is expected to begin this fall on the project, which will take the channel to its authorized depth of 38 feet MLLW.

Maritime Economic Development: Indiana – Jeffersonville, Kalama, Longview

Development projects advance at two ports, and one port is recognized for its contributions to the local economy.

Duke Energy Indiana has selected a 140-acre parcel of land inside the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville in Clark County for the utility's 2015 Site Readiness Program. Based on consultant recommendations, Duke Energy will collaborate with Ports of Indiana to develop a strategy for providing water, sewer, natural gas and electricity at the site.

The Port of Kalama has received a Pathways 2020 Community Champions Award for Economic Vitality. The award recognizes organizations that excel at creating jobs, employee wellness, training, employable skills, new or expanding business, transportation, financial security, reducing poverty and higher wages.
More than a month since the Port of Longview announced a dormant Riverside Refining proposal to build a micro refinery, the company has returned with a revised project that made it past the port’s initial review stage. The $800 million venture would produce 45,000 barrels per day of refined product destined for Washington and Oregon markets, one-third of it renewable fuel.

Logistics: Long Beach/Los Angeles

In their quest for new supply chain efficiencies, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have announced the creation of working groups focusing on peak operations and terminal optimization to develop ways to strengthen the competitiveness of the San Pedro Bay port complex.

Cruise: Trois-Rivières

The Port of Trois-Rivières hosted its first cruise ship of 2015 with the May 19 docking of Oceania Cruises’ Marina with its 1,252 passengers and 780 crew members. This year the port authority is expecting 18 cruise ships visits and 7,500 passengers, compared to three ships and 1,796 passengers in 2014.
