Mexico’s port system processed some 71.1 million metric tons of cargo during first quarter 2015, an increase of 1.4 percent from a year ago, according to "preliminary" data compiled and reported by the federal port agency, Coordinación General de Puertos y Marina Mercante. Especially substantial growth was experienced by the nation’s breakbulk, auto, and cruise sectors. Container throughput at North Carolina’s Port of Wilmington jumped 20.7 percent during first quarter 2015, to 72,451 TEUs from 60,028 a year ago, according to the North Carolina State Ports Authority (SPA)-. Volume skyrocketed 34.4 percent in March alone, putting the port on track to a record year.

 The Harbors Division of the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) began construction of the Piers 12 and 15 Improvements Project in Honolulu Harbor with a groundbreaking ceremony on April 21. It is one of a series of projects that will transform the former Kapalama Military Reservation into a container terminal.

Georgette Steffens, executive director of the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID), is the new chair of the Albany Port District Commission. The City of Montreal has appointed attorney Eric Simard to the board of directors of the Montreal Port Authority for a three-year term ending March 23, 2018. New Orleans businessman Arnold B. Baker on April 16 took his seat as the newest member of the board of commissioners of the Port of New Orleans.

 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded a $1.3 million grant to the Port of Los Angeles to fund the replacement of a diesel cargo crane with a new, zero-emission electric-drive crane. The 110-foot crane will be used to unload and process scrap metal on and off moving containers for overseas shipment. The Port of Seattle's Terminal 18 has been serving as a study site for two unique metal boxes that have bloomed into rain gardens that help reduce pollutants flowing into Puget Sound. The tests will assess the potential of the so-called Splash Boxxes to improve water quality of polluted runoff in commercial/industrial areas and whether soil mixes used in rain gardens and bioswales could be improved.

A major military cargo event occurred last week at the Port of Beaumont with the unloading of the USNS Mendoca (T-AKR-303) by Beaumont based soldiers from the 842nd Transportation Battalion. The ship arrived April 20 laden with more than 1,650 pieces of equipment comprised of vehicles, trailers, helicopters and other rolling stock from the Hawaii based 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 25th Infantry Division. The arrival on April 20 of the 655-foot bulk carrier M/V Irma signaled the official opening of the 2015 international shipping season at the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor. While in port, the ship unloaded 9,400 tons of steel coils destined for Tata Steel in Chicago.

Fitch Ratings has reaffirmed the Port Tampa Bay’s credit rating of A and has provided the authority with a "Positive" outlook. Standard & Poor’s Rating Services and Fitch Ratings recently assigned "AA" ratings to the City of Long Beach Harbor Department’s upcoming bond issuance and outstanding debt.

 Retired Port Hueneme Commissioner Raymond E. Fosse passed away April 16, 2015, at the age of 78. Capt. Fosse was a master mariner who served many years as a Port Hueneme harbor pilot and from 1991 to 2011 as an elected member of the board of commissioners of the Oxnard Harbor District.
