Billed as a "must-attend" for port and maritime professionals looking to the energy sector as a bottom line booster, AAPA’s first-ever Maritime Economic Development Energy Projects Seminar, hosted February 24-25 by the Port of Pensacola, drew more than 60 participants from Canada, Panama and the United States. The Nanaimo Port Authority is supporting the Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank in Nanaimo with a donation towards the mortgage of the bank’s new warehouse. The Port of Port Angeles’s newly adopted Community Partner Program offers matching funds to small cities and communities in Clallam County (WA) for trade promotion, tourism promotion, public education and awareness and economic development projects.

Port of Long Beach
The Port of Anchorage in 2014 experienced an increase in cargo tonnage overall for the first time in three years, with gains from 2013 of 4.0 percent in containerized cargo and vehicle traffic and a 59 percent jump in petroleum deliveries.

Deepening the Savannah harbor to 47 feet is set to begin following the award of a $134.5 million contract by the Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Dredging the outer harbor is the first step in the so called Savannah Harbor Expansion Project, or SHEP, to deepen the entire 40-mile shipping channel and harbor from the Atlantic Ocean to the Georgia Ports Authority terminal in Garden City. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works Review Board has approved the final environmental and economic feasibility studies for the Port Everglades channel widening and deepening project. The project will deepen the main navigational channels from 42 to 48 feet (plus 1-foot required and another 1-foot allowable overdepth for a total of 50 feet) and widen the Entrance Channel and the maneuverability constrained Southport Access Channel.

Master riggers at JAXPORT tenant Portus recently offloaded the first shipment of Mk VI Patrol Boats purchased by the U.S. Navy at the heavy lift and specialty cargo berth of the port authority’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. Port Tampa Bay has signed a six-year lease with Gulf Coast Bulk Equipment, Inc. (GCBE), to handle prilled sulfur imports on a five-acre parcel of land at its Port Redwing complex in southern Hillsborough County.

Carnival Cruise Line will expand capacity on its short cruise program from the Port of New Orleans by 34 percent when Carnival Triumph replaces Carnival Elation next spring. Three prominent cruise ships visited the Port of San Francisco in recent weeks on round-the-world cruises. All three – P&O Cruises’ Acadia by P&O Cruises and Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria by Cunard Line – are operated by Carnival Corporation brand companies.

Three companies that own the vast majority of chassis serving the San Pedro Bay ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles on March 1 activated a "gray chassis fleet" of truck-trailers with the objective of improve the flow of goods through America’s largest container handling complex.

Fitch Ratings has upgraded its rating to 'A-' with a Rating Outlook of Stable for the Alabama State Port Authority’s (ASPA) outstanding dock facilities revenue bonds. The agency’s endorsement recognized the port authority's strong debt service coverage, as well as the diversification of revenue sources.

The Port of Houston Authority has received its fifth certification to ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) Standards. A newly released study indicates air emissions from Port of San Francisco maritime operations have decreased sharply over the past eight years and should fall even further with the new shore power installations at Piers 27 and 70.
