Reversing a two-year pattern of decline, America’s waterborne foreign trade grew in 2014, up 2.4 percent from the year before to 1.29 billion metric tons, according to data collected and reported by the U.S. Census Bureau. The Maryland Port Administration reports that 2014 was a record-setting year for autos, containers and general cargo tonnage at the Port of Baltimore’s public marine terminals. The Port of Hamilton experienced a 5-percent increase in cargo in 2014, with oversea trade alone jumping 39 percent to a 10-year high of 2.0 million tons.

Major business investments are coming this year to the Port of Anchorage. Delta Western, a petroleum and lubricants distribution company, is scheduled to break ground on a new facility at the port while Alaska Basic Industries (ABI) will expand its cement operation. Volkswagen Group of America is moving its import facility for cars and SUVs and its Southeast U.S. distribution operations to the Port of Jacksonville. Volkswagen, Audi and Bentley expect to transport 100,000 cars within one year and approximately 550,000 units in the next five years. The board of commissioners of the Port of Vancouver USA on February 10 unanimously approved selling 18.9 acres of "prime light-industrial property" to Sunlight Supply Inc./National Garden Wholesale. The Vancouver-based company and port tenant is planning to build a 285,000-square-foot facility that would accommodate its corporate headquarters, as well as manufacturing, warehouse and office space.
