Port Canaveral Scrap Terminal LLC (PCST) loaded its first cargo on January 8 – 20,000 tons of scrap metal for export to Turkey – from the terminal site it has leased since last September from the Canaveral Port Authority. The 8,100 TEU MOL Competence became the largest vessel to call the Port of Jacksonville when it docked the TraPac Container Terminal on January 6. Giant tanks bound for a new Belgium Brewery plant in Asheville (NC) are being transshipped through North Carolina’s Port of Wilmington to the construction site 350 miles away.

New Saturday and Sunday gates are putting a dent in an extraordinary cargo buildup at the Port of Oakland. According to the port, more than 1,000 U.S. import containers have moved out of its marine terminals every weekend for the past month.

Port of Long Beach
PortMiami experienced an especially busy cruise day on January 4, docking nine ships and processing nearly 42,000 passengers. Port Everglades’ remodeled Cruise Terminal 4 officially opened January 8 after $24 million worth of renovations and upgrades designed for greater efficiency and guest convenience.

Port of Everett Marketing Director Walter Seidl has been named marine terminal director, replacing Dave Madill who is retiring in April. Clyde Fitzgerald and Roy Mease have each been reappointed to the Houston Port Commission and Commissioner John D. Kennedy's term has been extended to February 1, 2016.  Brandy D. Christian has been named chief operating officer of the Port of New Orleans. Blair J. Ciklin one of the nation’s longest serving port commissioners, was elected chairman of the Port of Palm Beach District Board of Commissioners at a special board meeting on January 6.  Juan J. Flores has joined the Port Everglades  management team as assistant to the port director for intermodal programs.  The Port of Seattle Commission has re-elected Co-Presidents Stephanie Bowman and Courtney Gregoire for a full-year term.

Auto imports at the Port of Santa Marta jumped 37 percent in 2014, making it the busiest ro/ro port on Colombia’s Caribbean coast.  Container throughput at the Port of Virginia hit a record high in 2014 of 2.3 million TEUs, beating the prior record, set in 2013, by 7.6 percent.

The ports of Montreal and Sept-Îles welcomed their first ships of 2015 – the container ship Valencia Express at Montreal on January 1 and the bulk carrier Cape Nelson at Sept-Iles on January 4.
