Taking aim at the bottleneck that has slowed cargo movement through the Port of Long Beach, its Board of Harbor Commissioners on Dec. 22 approved measures to relieve congestion, including a petition of the Federal Maritime Commission for permission to work in concert with the neighboring Port of Los Angeles. The Port of Oakland is taking steps to manage a recent upsurge of container ship traffic.
The board of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority has approved an annual budget for 2015 that includes $20 million for capital investments in maritime operations and sediment management.
The last oceangoing vessel to call the Port of Duluth/Superior this year departed just after midnight Friday, Dec. 19 – passing beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge at 12:26 a.m. Saturday. The Palmerton had arrived earlier in the week to discharge project cargo at the Clure Public Marine Terminal in Duluth.
Port Freeport expects to move into a new administration building by early 2016. The three-story, 20,000 square-foot tilt-wall panel building will complement the recently completed emergency operations center located near the main entry gate.
A banner year is expected for the Port of Houston Authority in 2014, with 34 million tons of cargo handled through November, Executive Director Roger Guenther told the Port Commission at its December meeting.
