Public and private marine terminal activity in the Port of Boston generated economic impacts totaling $4.6 billion and supported more than 50,000 jobs in 2012, according to a newly released report commissioned by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). Mexico’s port system processed just over 141.9 million metric tons of cargo during first half 2014, an increase of 2.0 percent from a year ago, according to "preliminary" data compiled and reported by the federal port agency, Coordinación General de Puertos y Marina Mercante. The trade boom continues at the Port of Philadelphia, with cargos handled at PRPA terminals totaling 2,853,362 metric tons, an increase of 13.2 percent from 2,519,967 tons in January-May 2013.

Two new gantry cranes arrived fully erect and ready for installation at Port Freeport on July 19, completing a voyage that began in Shanghai, China, on May 7. Dredging has started on the first of two improvement projects to deepen the Port of Houston Authority's container terminal channels from 40 feet to 45 feet, matching the depth of the Houston Ship Channel. Top officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) joined local maritime leaders last week in Jacksonville for a ceremony dedicating a Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System designed to save money, improve safety and enhance research regarding conditions in the St. Johns River.

A partnership comprising affiliates of investment funds managed by Alinda Capital Partners (Alinda) and Universities Superannuation Scheme Limited (USS) will purchase APM Terminal’s container terminal located in Portsmouth (VA). The transaction is subject to standard regulatory approvals and is expected to close during the third quarter of 2014, following which the terminal will be renamed as "Virginia International Gateway."
