Mexico’s Pacific Coast port of Lázaro Cárdenas on July 1 handled its first international container transshipment – a box laden with lubricants bound for Chile from Houston, Texas. The Georgia Ports Authority is participating in a USDA pilot program that will expedite the handling of fruit and produce imported from South America via the Port of Savannah.

A newly released study commissioned by the Port of Lake Charles forecasts Calcasieu Ship Channel vessel traffic will increase by more than 50 percent in the next five years and double by 2023 as a result of expanded operations of existing terminals and the construction of new facilities. A July 8 ceremony marked completion of work to expand the rail unloading capacity of the West Coast Reduction Ltd. facility in Port Metro Vancouver.

Panamanian President Juan Carols Varela announced July 4 his appointment of Jorge Barakat Pitty to succeed Roberto Linares as chief administrator of Autoridad Marítima de Panamá (AMP). John L. Pennison, deputy port director of the Plaquemines Port Harbor and Terminal District, has been named president of the Lower Mississippi River Port-wide Strategic Security Council. Eunejune Kim is the newly-appointed chief harbor engineer for the Port of San Francisco.

The ports of Los Angeles and Shanghai on July 10 signed a formal agreement to exchange information, technical expertise and best practices to expand use of shore power at the Shanghai. The Port of Tacoma’s sustainability commitment has earned it an Inbound Logistics Green Supply Chain Partner honor for the fifth year running.

The Port of New Orleans and Carnival Cruise Lines on July 8 signed an agreement that ensures the sailing of at least two Carnival ships year-round from New Orleans through 2019. The new agreement supersedes a 2013 three-year extension and includes three one-year options that could guarantee Carnival homeports at least two ships of equal or greater size than the Dream- and Fantasy-class ships sailing from New Orleans through 2022. The new agreement took effect July 1, 2014.
