Port container trade volumes within the geo-political region encompassed by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) reached a record high in 2013 of 54.6 million TEUs. It was a record year, too, for Mexico and Canada, while the United States enjoyed its best year since 2007.

The Long Beach City Council recently approved the appointment of longtime Long Beach City College executive Lou Anne Bynum to the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, the five-member governing body of the Port of Long BeachPort of Port Angeles Executive Director Ken O’Hollaren has promoted Finance Director Karen Goschen to deputy executive director. Kenneth Clayton, P.Eng., has joined the board of directors of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

The Seaport Planning Activities of American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Member Seaports, a research paper authored by Natacha J. Yacinthe, Ph.D., in fulfillment of a requirement of AAPA’s Professional Port Manager (PPM®) program has been approved by the Curriculum Committee Dr. Yacinthe is the Principal Seaport Planner and Master/Vision Plan Project Manager for Port Everglades. The paper is based on a survey she conducted in 2013 and can be accessed on the AAPA website free of charge by AAPA members and for $20 by non-members.

The Port of Grays Harbor Commission has approved the lease assignment of Westport Shipyard, Inc. to new owners Westport, LLC, a group that includes members of the Louisiana-based Chouest family. Westport Shipyard, Inc. leases Warehouse H from the port for the construction its W34 model 112-foot yachts.

In 2013, revenues generated by the Port of Milwaukee exceeded expenses by more than $1.4 million – money that is available to support basic city services. The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners approved a $938.8 million fiscal year annual budget for the Port of Los Angeles that includes $350 million budget allotted toward capital.

Bicycle supplier Dynacraft has chosen the Port of Savannah as its new East Coast gateway. The California-based company will serve not only the Southeast, but also portions of the Southwest, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions via Savannah.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker presented the Port of Everett with the President’s "E" Award for Export Service at a May 28 ceremony in Washington, D.C. The "E" Awards recognize "persons, firms or organizations that contribute significantly in the effort to increase United States exports."

Mississippi State Port Authority at Gulf Port
Albany Port District Commissioner Anthony J. Ferrara passed away May 24 at the age of 89. First appointed to the commission in December 2000 by Gov. Pataki, he was reappointed to subsequent terms, most by recently by Gov. Cuomo, and was serving as its treasurer at the time of death.
