Export tonnage set yet another record, but America's waterborne foreign trade overall declined in 2013 for the second year in in a row, according to data collected and reported by the U.S. Census Bureau. Import volume at America's major containerized retail cargo handling ports should increase 4.3 percent during half 2014 despite a drop in February, predicts the monthly Global Port Tracker report released February 11 by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates.

From January through November 2013, the ports of Colombia received 259,805 cruise passengers, a 26 percent increase from the corresponding period of 2013, according to data released by the country's ministry of trade, industry and tourism. For the third consecutive year, record numbers of cruise passengers set sail from the Port of New Orleans.

Port Corpus Christi has completed the La Quinta Channel Extension Project with a ceremony on February 7. Rail tracks and crane pads are being installed in preparation for the opening this summer of the Port Everglades Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF).

Port Canaveral proposes sharing under-utilized NASA and Air Force land in a partnership that would reduce operating costs to the federal government and allow for port expansion and rail connectivity. The Port of New Orleans has entered into a partnership with the Merritt C.
