Canaveral Port Authority has hired two veteran port executives and promoted a third to help expand cargo business development and terminal operations at Port Canaveral. The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has promoted Richard D. Cameron to managing director of environmental affairs and planning for the Port of Long Beach. Port of Oakland Executive Director Chris Lytle has named maritime industry veteran John C. Driscoll the port’s new director of maritime, effective January 27.

During their meeting of January 14, Port Corpus Christi Commissioners elected officers for 2014 and witnessed the swearing in of two new commissioners. The Port of Hueneme Board of Commissioners voted in officers for 2014 at their first meeting of January 13. Colleen McAleer was sworn in as a Port Angeles port commissioner at the commission’s January 13 meeting.

The Port of Corpus Christi Authority (POCCA) on January 14 joined the city of Pharr (TX) in signing a memorandum of understanding to promote business opportunities between the Pharr International Bridge and Port Corpus Christi. Beginning next month, Pacific International Lines’ new Asia Pacific Northwest Service (ANW) will call the Port of Seattle’s Terminal 30 in partnership with China Shipping Container Lines’ (CSCL) and United Arab Shipping Company’s (UASC) existing joint service.

Import volume at the largest U.S. containerized merchandise handling ports rose an estimated 2.8 percent in CY 2013, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released January 10 by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates. The Ohio River Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon finished 2013 with more cargo during the fourth quarter than any other quarter in its 37-year history. Liquid bulks, American-grown agricultural products and American-made autos and biodiesel were among the diverse cargoes that moved in record quantities through the Port of Grays Harbor in 2013. The Port of Green Bay ended the 2013 shipping season on top, surpassing its goal of 2 million metric tons of cargo for the year. A total of 2.2 million metric tons of material were imported and exported during the shipping season, an increase of 16 percent from 2012 and the highest tonnage since 2007.
