Import volume at the top U.S. containerized retail cargo handling container ports should be up 1.8 percent in December and 2.3 percent in CY 2013 from year-earlier levels, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released December 9 by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates. The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reports strongly positive business results for November. The Port of Milwaukee completed loading its last ocean-going ship of the season on December 13 and is expecting a year-end cargo tally of 2.7 million metric tons, up from 2.0 million in 2012.

AAPA has signed a cooperation agreement with the U.S. Maritime Administration to work together on a port planning and investment toolkit. A Request for Technical Assistance seeking volunteers to assist in the project was released on December 13, 2013 with responses requested by January 10, 2014. AAPA also will be hiring a contractor, through a separate process, to conduct focus groups and other meetings of these technical experts and to develop the tool kit.

AIVP – the International Association of Port Cities – has produced a "missions charter" for port centers created to facilitate "integration between the city, the port and the public." The Port of Bellingham has joined the city of Bellingham in adopting a agreement for the development of a "waterfront district" on the site of a former Georgia Pacific pulp and paper mill. The Port of Grays Harbor’s purchase of the manufacturing assets of NewWood Corporation, a bankrupt former tenant of the port’s Satsop Business Park, has been approved by a superior court judge. The Port of Los Angeles’ Southern Pacific Slip Waterfront Plaza received the 2013 B.E.S.T. Project of the Year award from the Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

Royal Caribbean International’s Serenade of the Seas has begun a season of alternating Bahamas and western Caribbean cruises from the Port of New Orleans.

The ports of Hueneme and Los Angeles have each renewed their long-term lease agreements with Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics. Likewise, Dole Food Company has agreed to remain at the Port of Wilmington (DE) for another 15 years.

The Port of Beaumont received its first rail unit trainshipment of crude oil. The board of commissioners of the Port of San Diego has adopted a Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on port district tidelands. The ports of Seattle, Tacoma and Metro Vancouver aim to cut diesel emissions by 75 percent per ton of cargo moved by 2015 and 80 percent by 2020, from a 2005 baseline.
