Located on Mucuripe Bay in the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará, the Port of Fortaleza is linked by shipping services to the United States, Canada, Central America, Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Africa, as well the Mercosul region of South America. Domestic shipping services tie it commercially with other Brazilian ports. In 2012, the port handled more than 4.4 million metric tons of bulk, breakbulk and containerized cargo. Cargo commodities include cashew nuts, carnauba wax, metal, fabric, fruit, wheat, lubricants, fuels, malt and petroleum derivatives.

Gov. Rick Scott on October 16 announced a commitment of nearly $35 million for strategic port projects across Florida that will be recommended to the state Legislature during its upcoming session. All four of the super post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes that were delivered this summer to the Port of Savannah are now fully operational at Georgia Ports Authority’s Garden City Terminal. The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, Midwest Terminals of Toledo and Finance Fund joined area officials on October 21 for a groundbreaking ceremony for a warehouse at Ironville Terminal.

A sister port agreement between Shenzhen and Halifax was signed October 14 in the Chinese port city by Huang Min, director general of the Transport Commission of the Shenzhen Municipality and Geoffrey Machum, Q.C., chair of the Halifax Port Authority. The Mississippi State Port Authority and Island View Casino Resort on October 17 signed a long-term lease that provides for an expansion of the resort’s hotel operations in Gulfport. The Port of Los Angeles Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Program awarded $97.6 million in contracts to small businesses during the 2012-2013 fiscal year. AIDA Cruises will homeport two vessels in Tampa, AIDAvita in 2014-2015 and AIDAmar in 2015-2016 cruise season.

The American Association of Port Authorities’ 102nd Annual Convention in Orlando/Port Canaveral, October 13-17, drew about 700 participants from all four of the association’s Western Hemisphere geographic regions (Canada, United States, Caribbean and Latin America). Hosted by the Canaveral Port Authority, the convention agenda included a robust business program of top-tier business and government presenters, complemented by a vast and vibrant array of entertainment and networking activities, concluding on the final day with an evening gala for the outgoing chairman.

September was the second consecutive month of double digit container traffic growth for the Port of Long Beach, with volume up 14.7 percent from a year ago to 587,114 TEUs. Some 23 million metric tons of cargo transited the St. Lawrence Seaway from its opening March 22 through September 30, down 11 percent from a year ago, according to the U.S. Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. The Virginia Port Authority reports September was another month of container traffic growth for its Hampton Roads marine terminals.

The public marine terminals in the Port of Baltimore owned and managed by the Maryland Port Administration (MPA), have received an excellent security assessment from the U.S. Coast Guard for the sixth consecutive year. The Mississippi State Port Authority on October 24 unveiled its new $2 million security gate complex at the Port of Gulfport.

The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) has completed a comprehensive new video production highlighting the port’s facilities, services and future development. The Port of San Diego is now offering a mobile app designed to help travelers plan and coordinate cruises to and from San Diego.
