The Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) recently approved $1.7 million in federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) funds to support the Port of Hueneme’s shoreside electrification power project. The Port of Kalama commission voted earlier this month to award a $4.5 million contract for the construction of a new facility designed to preserve the port’s historic legacy and house its administrative offices. A heavy-lift ship carrying four brand new super post-Panamax cranes arrived at PortMiami the afternoon of October 7 after a 60-day voyage from China.

Despite concern about the federal government shutdown, import volume at the nation’s major retail container ports is expected to grow 9.1 percent in October over the same month last year, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released October 7 by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

Canadian Transport Minister Lisa Raitt on October 8 announced the appointment of Danika Keeley to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Belledune Port Authority. The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey on October 8 unveiled a new command structure to lead the nearly 1,600-member Port Authority Police Department (PAPD). Canada’s Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Transport and the Port Users Nominating Committee, has reappointed Eugene Kwan and Marcella Szel to the Port Metro Vancouver Board of Directors.

Shipments of autos and machinery handled at Georgia Ports Authority’s Brunswick facilities hit a record high for the second year in a row in FY 2013. The AIDAbella, became the largest cruise ship to call the Port of Montreal when it docked at the port authority’s Iberville Passenger Terminal in the morning of October 2. Business is booming at the Port of Windsor and could surpass the record 5.8 million metric tons set in 2006.
