Four keynote speakers will headline AAPA's annual convention in Orlando next month (Oct. 13-17). U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary John Porcari, along with Canadian Ambassador to the United States Gary Doer and Disney Cruise Line President Karl Holz, are confirmed. Import volume at the top U.S. containerized retail cargo handling ports is expected to grow 5.1 percent in September as retailers head into the holiday season, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released September 9 by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

In his State of the Port address, Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Curtis Foltz reported record cargo volumes, an influx of new business, and more than 1 million square feet of distribution center space leased or developed. Five vessel calls in a four-day span in early August had the Port of Grays Harbor abuzz with activity and employment at all four of the port's deep-water terminals, and the port documented the employment this vessel activity created in those four days.

With its newly awarded $10 million TIGER grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Duluth Seaway Port Authority is preparing to embark on a new project that will markedly expand the port’s general cargo handling capacity. The Port of Palm Beach has secured $525,000 as part of the Fiscal Year 2013 Port Security Grant Program to strengthen the port’s access-control monitoring, security training and domain awareness capabilities.
