In Alabama, Angus R. Cooper III and Tim Parker III were named to the Alabama State Port Authority's board of directors, and Mr. Cooper was named chairman of the board. The Virginia Port Authority also welcomed a new board chairman recently: Jeffrey D. Wassmer was elected to the position on July 31.

The Port of Brownsville approved a contract for construction of Cargo Dock 16, which will be funded in part by a U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER grant. PortMiami is awaiting the arrival of four Super Post-Panamax cranes, due to arrive at the port in September. The Port of Port Angeles has received preliminary notice of a $1.5 million grant award from the U.S. Economic Development Administration that will help finance major redevelopment to Terminal 1 during the next two to three years.

Two East Coast ports recently announced cargo handling records: The Port of Baltimore handled a record 9.55 million tons in the just-ended fiscal year, and at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, ExpressRail – the rail line serving the port's marine terminals – handled its 5 millionth container since it opened in 1991.

In Boston, Massport awarded nearly half a million dollars in grants to fund summer employments for more than 300 students as part of the port authority's Community Summer Jobs Program. The Port of Los Angeles approved a Port Master Plan, its first comprehensive update in nearly 30 years of the document that guides the port's decisions regarding resource use, terminal efficiency, public access to the waterfront, recreational uses and historic preservation.
