The XXII Latin American Congress of Ports, held in Bogota, June 25-28, was a complete success. With 450 participants and 50 sponsors, the Congress received great international interest, as it was co-sponsored by AAPA and the four major regional ports of Colombia - Barranquilla, Buenaventura, Cartagena and Santa Marta. The excellent roster of speakers represented ports and firms from around the globe; registrants came from more than 25 nations.

In Gulfport, the Mississippi State Port Authority approved a long-term lease to expand DuPont’s operations at the port’s West Pier. The Tampa Port Authority and AMPORTS recently announced a strategic partnership that will lead to the development of a new terminal to import and export automobiles. The Virginia Port Authority and the Port of Salalah (Oman) signed an MOU aimed at generating more business between the Middle East and Norfolk.

The Oregon legislature approved $10 million for the Port of Coos Bay to continue rehabilitating the 134-mile Coos Bay rail line. The Georgia Ports Authority recently unveiled a new mobile command center from which the port could manage its entire operation in case of an emergency. In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker announced nearly $13 million in Harbor Assistance Program grants for dredging and repair of dock facilities.

Those attending AAPA’s 102nd Annual Convention and Expo in Orlando in October should not miss the session on Wednesday, Oct. 16, titled "Communications Strategies in Times of Crisis - When the Public Eye is Centered on Your Port." At the Port of Redwood City, cargo volume increased 13 percent in the recently ended fiscal year, thanks to an upturn in construction activity in the San Francisco Bay area. For the fourth year in a row, the Port of Tacoma was recently named a Green Supply Chain Partner by Inbound Logistics.
