Twenty shipping lines were honored by the Port of Long Beach on May 30 for their efforts to improve air quality locally by slowing down or deploying cleaner vessels - or both. Thirteen shipping lines were found to be top performers, earning Green Flags this year. Ten shipping lines received the first Green Ship awards, a program that since July 2012 has encouraged vessel operators to assign the cleanest ships to Long Beach.

The Los Angeles Harbor Commission has adopted a 2013-2014 fiscal year budget of approximately $1.1 billion for the Port of Los Angeles, including $399.7 million for capital improvements. The budget supports more than 8,500 jobs, 6,870 of which are attributable to construction project spending in the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Port Manatee and Rio de Janeiro are now sister ports. Jorge Luiz de Mello, president-director of the Brazilian port authority, Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro, signed the agreement in Manatee County during the June 4 meeting of the Manatee County Port Authority (MCPA), along with MCPA Chairman Carol Whitmore and Executive Director Carlos Buqueras.

Between November 2012 and April 2013, the Terminal de Contenedores de Yucatán (TCY) in the Port of Progreso moved around 1,500 40-foot reefer containers laden with approximately 30,000 metric tons of cucumbers harvested in Yucatán state. That set a record, beating the previous high of 1,271 containers set in the 2008-2009 season.
