For the first time in the history of the AAPA Communications Awards Program, the Georgia Ports Authority will be honored with the Dan Maynard Communications Award for Overall Excellence. This "traveling" award is presented each year at AAPA's Annual Convention to the port that earns the most award points in the competition. As a result of the judging, 28 entries from 14 ports earned an Award of Excellence, while 52 entries from 18 ports earned an Award of Distinction, and 19 entries from seven ports earned Awards of Merit.

Standard & Poor's (S&P) has upgraded the Alabama State Port Authority's outstanding dock facilities revenue bonds to an A- rating from BBB+ and given all of the port authority's bonds a "stable" Rating Outlook. The higher rating reflects the port authority's potential revenue diversification with the opening of the Pinto Terminal, a strong niche position, increasing cargo trends and increased financial margins.

U.S. District Judge Richard M. Gergel on May 29 accepted the settlement agreement between all parties involved in the mediation over the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP) in an order that dismissed the federal litigation pending against the proposed deepening of the harbor channel.

 The Port of Houston Fire Department is about to take delivery of the first of three high-performance fireboats. A five-member crew, including three from the port authority's fire department, brought the new craft from MetalCraft Marine Inc.'s construction facilities near the mouth of Lake Ontario across the Great Lakes to Chicago, from Chicago to New Orleans via the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers, and across the Gulf of Mexico to Galveston, where it paused before continuing on to Houston.

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners recently adopted a policy to protect the historical, cultural and architectural sites and structures at the Port of Los Angeles. The Port of Los Angeles Cultural Resource Policy emphasizes the port's leadership role in encouraging and establishing priorities for the identification, evaluation and protection of these resources.

Maersk Line has added PortMiami to its Transpacific 7 (TP7) service. The Danish carrier has deployed vessels ranging in capacity up to 8,700 TEUs in the weekly service, which is being handled by South Florida Container Terminal Miami at its PortMiami cargo yard. The inaugural caller was the 6,700 TEU Maersk Kristina on May 24.

Reporting at its recently concluded annual meeting, the Montreal Port Authority told stakeholders that 2012 cargo throughput totaled 28.4 million metric tons, down just 0.4 percent from the record 28.5 million tons handled in 2011. Dry bulk cargo accounted for 6.5 million tons (up 26.5 percent due to a 76 percent surge in grain shipments), liquid bulks for 9.7 million tons (-9.7 percent) and containerized cargo for 12 million tons (-3.5 percent).

 CSL Tecumseh, a technologically-advanced bulk carrier, paid a maiden voyage call to the Port of Redwood City on May 29. Named for a Shawnee war chief, Tecumseh brought 40,000 tons of construction aggregates from the Orca Quarry in British Columbia. The material was delivered to port tenant Cemex Aggregates for ultimate distribution to ready-mix concrete plants.

 A joint project that restored 300 acres of marsh and wetlands in South San Diego Bay has earned an environmental award from the Obama Administration. The Port of San Diego, along with its project partners at the federal, state and non-profit level, received the Coastal America Partnership Award on May 29. The award recognizes outstanding efforts to restore and protect the coastal environment.

The board of commissioners of the Virginia Port Authority (VPA) on May 28 approved a long-term restructuring plan aimed at creating an even more efficient, responsive, competitive and customer-focused port. The resolution, which was approved unanimously, authorizes the officers and staff of VPA and its terminal operating company, Virginia International Terminals, to do the work necessary to implement the reorganization.
