Import volume at the top U.S. containerized retail cargo handling ports is expected to increase 3.3 percent in May compared to May 2012, but growth could dwindle to a standstill by the end of the summer, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released May 14 by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates.

The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority will finance a campus expansion and improvement project at Beaumont School in Cleveland Heights. The port authority's board of directors on May 16 agreed today to issue up to $8,160,000 for the project, which includes construction of a new science and technology building, and facility upgrades to enhance access for people with disabilities.

Kent Bicycles plans to ship more than a million units a year through the Port of Savannah. Kent has contracted with Schneider Port Logistics, a third-party logistics provider with warehousing space flexing to accommodate the number of units on site.

Nova Scotia's 2013 cruise ship season got underway May 6 with the arrival of Holland America's Veendam and Silversea's Silver Whisper at the Port of Halifax. The port authority is expecting 133 vessels and approximately 240,000 passengers this season, which continues through the end of October.

Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) staffers are volunteering to help rowing teams from area high schools and McMaster University stay safe during their training programs this spring. The HPA is partnering with the Leander Boat Club to provide on-water support during the cold water training period, with volunteers stationed aboard the port's new Zodiac Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB).

The Port of Long Beach reports container volumes, measured in TEUs, rose by 12.5 percent in April, continuing a trend of steadily increasing activity at its docks. That includes gains from a year ago of 13.5 percent by inbound loads, 14.5 percent for outbound loads and 8.1 percent by empty containers.

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) has authorized the passage of vessels up to 44 meters/144.4 feet wide along the Quebec-Montreal section of the St. Lawrence navigation channel. The previous authorized width was 32.1 meters/105.3 feet without restrictions. The Coast Guard's decision means that post-Panamax size ships, including 6,000-TEU container ships, will be permitted to navigate upriver to the Port of Montreal.

Port Manatee has promoted three key staff members and hired a new corporate communications manager. Promoted were Chief Financial Officer and Senior Director of Business Robert J. Armstrong to deputy executive director and CFO, Director of Seaport Security Frank Holden to senior director of seaport security, and Compliance Manager David St. Pierre to deputy director of seaport security.

Tom Corbett joined Chilean Agricultural Minister Luis Mayol Bouchon and senior Chilean agricultural officials May 14 at the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority's Packer Avenue Marine Terminal to observe the unloading of Bahia Castillo, a Hamburg Süd container ship carrying reefer containers laden with thousands of tons of fresh Chilean fruit for the U.S. and Canadian markets.

Port Metro Vancouver has been named to the 2012 "Green 30" list of Canadian organizations whose employees are most positive about their record on environmental stewardship. The list, compiled by Aon Hewitt, is based on employee opinion data collected as part of the annual Best Employers in Canada study and Best Small and Medium Employers study. More than 190,000 employees and 2,500 leaders in 280 organizations participated in the 2013 edition of these studies.

Christopher Fajkos has joined the Port of Redwood City as manager of environmental, security and safety. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Mr. Fajkos served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 2004 to 2010. While stationed aboard the in Alameda-based Coast Guard cutter Munro, he participated in multiple Alaskan and Eastern Pacific counter-narcotics patrols.

Fourteen months after setting a U.S. East Coast record for handling a deep-draft container ship, the Port of Virginia broke its own record. MSC Chicago called APM Terminals in Portsmouth on Friday, May 10, worked through the night and sailed fully loaded the next morning on a draft of 49 feet, 3 inches (15 meters). The port's previous record, 48.5 feet, was set by the MSC Roma on March 1, 2012.

Mark Ivey Sheppard, vice president for trade and development for the Alabama State Port Authority, died May 14 at his home following a brief illness. He was 61 years old. Recruited by the Alabama State Port Authority in February 2005, Mr. Sheppard led trade and carrier development for the port authority's intermodal investments. Under his tenure, business and ocean carrier service expanded at the new container terminal despite a global economic recession from 2008 through 2010.
