A new study commissioned by the National Retail Federation and other trade associations argues that imported merchandise has considerably lowered the price of consumer goods for American families while creating millions of jobs for American workers. The Imports Work for America study found that imports improve American families' standard of living by ensuring a wide selection of budget-friendly goods, from clothing and footwear to consumer electronics.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) launched its 2013 cruise season with the May 2 sailing to Bermuda of Norwegian Dawn from Cruiseport Boston's Black Falcon Terminal in South Boston. This year for the first time, Massport is offering travelers free wireless Internet access at the cruise terminal. The free WiFi service is supported by advertising and sponsorship programs.

The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority re-opened the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve on May 1, in time for the spring bird migration season. The 88-acre wildlife haven had been temporarily closed during the environmental remediation of 5-acre site.

At its annual meeting earlier this spring, the Duluth Seaway Port Authority Board of Commissioners elected officers for fiscal year 2014, which began April 1. Re-elected to their posts were Steve Raukar, president; Ray Klosowski, vice president; and Rick Revoir, assistant treasurer. Commissioners Cal Larson and Norm Voorhees were elected treasurer and secretary, respectively.

Beginning in November 2013, Royal Caribbean International's Navigator of the Seas will sail year-round from the Port of Galveston on seven-night, roundtrip Western Caribbean itineraries as a replacement for the Mariner of the Seas. Navigator of the Seas is due for extensive drydock revitalization in January 2014.

The first Toyota Venzas to be exported from the Port of Brunswick departed the Georgia Ports Authority's Colonel's Island Terminal May 2 aboard the K Line vessel California Highway bound for Russia and the Ukraine. The Toyota Venzas are produced at the company’s Georgetown, Ky., plant, which employs about 6,600 people and represents a $6 billion investment. It is the company's largest manufacturing facility outside of Japan.

The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) on May 6 welcomed the first vessel call from Bahri General Cargo, formerly known as the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia. The vessel Bahri Abha called on JAXPORT's Blount Island Marine Terminal to load vehicles and other cargoes headed to the Middle East.

Maersk Line is adding a third vessel and port calls in Panama and Costa Rica to its weekly South Atlantic Express (SAE) service between North Carolina's Port of Wilmington and Central America. Wilmington port users now have direct access to the ports of Manzanillo, Panama, and Limón/Moin, Costa Rica, as well as Puerto Cortés, Honduras, and Santo Tomás, Guatemala.

The Prince Rupert and Region Music Society is the latest beneficiary of the Prince Rupert Port Authority's Community Investment Fund, a $250,000 donation for the construction of a new music studio at Prince Rupert's Charles Hays Secondary School (CHSS). The port authority donation leverages contributions from other community organizations. Financial and in-kind donations from a variety of other businesses, groups and individuals make up the $762,600 total cost for the project.

Port Saint John is celebrating 25 years in the cruise business. Now, it's looking to the future by partnering with the New Brunswick Department of Tourism in studying the feasibility of making Saint John a cruise ship homeport, where passengers could begin or end their voyages.

Three cruise ships carrying more than 5,400 passengers docked at the Port of San Diego on May 7. Celebrity Solstice and the Oceania Regatta were making inaugural visits San Diego. At 1,041 feet, the Solstice is the longest cruise ship to call the Southern California port. The third visitor was Holland America's Zuiderdam.

Port of Seattle CEO Tay Yoshitani has promoted port executive Kurt Beckett to deputy chief executive officer and assigned him primary responsibility for port infrastructure development and internal operations. According to the port, the move will allow Mr. Yoshitani to focus exclusively on business development, attracting new shipping lines and air services to Seattle, and advancing policy issues central to the port's competitiveness.

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded the Port of Tacoma its Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the port's 2013 budget document. To qualify for the award, the port "had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation," according to the GFOA announcement.

ZIM America is revising the port rotations of its ZCP (ZIM Container Service Pacific) vessel service to include a stop at the Virginia Port Authority's APM Portsmouth container facility in the Port of Hampton Roads. It's scheduled to begin with a June 15 call by the containership ZIM Mediterranean.
