The Port of Los Angeles is in its final stretch of planning and preparation to host the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) 28th World Ports Conference, May 6-10 at the JW Marriott hotel and conference facility at LA LIVE in downtown Los Angeles. This biennial conference will cover an array of economic, security, logistics and environmental challenges and trends confronting ports worldwide.

 Nordic Cold Storage has opened of the first phase of a storage and blast facility located near the Port of Savannah. The site has more than 200,000 square feet of convertible temperature-controlled storage space and is capable of blasting more than 10 million pounds of product, ranging from fresh poultry to produce, per week. This $30 million facility currently employs 150 workers. The cold storage warehouse received its first shipments this month. Nordic plans to begin work by the end of the year on a second phase, which will mirror the existing infrastructure.

The Port of Grays Harbor reports a busy first quarter 2013, with 37 ships and barges loading automobiles, grains, liquid bulks, logs and woodchips for export. These cargoes generated more than 45,000 working hours, or the equivalent, says the port, of 90 full-time jobs, for Grays Harbor longshore workers from January through March. Vessel and barge traffic was up 68 percent from first quarter 2012.

Port of Long Beach modernization projects created 5,166 construction-related jobs in 2012, most of them linked to contracts for the design and building of the Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement and an ongoing terminal makeover. The projects are part of the port’s 10-year, $4.5 billion capital improvement program.

The Port of Los Angeles reports March container volume fell 22.6 percent to 503,168 TEUs from 650,452 TEUs in March 2012. That followed a 17.9 percent surge in February and reflects declines for imports (-28.7 percent) exports (-17.9 percent) and empty containers (-14.6 percent). The port attributes the March drop to the loss of a vessel service and most especially to the timing of the Chinese New Year, which slows production in Asian countries that export to the United States.

 Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett joined other officials at Packer Avenue Marine Terminal on April 16 in officially welcoming Horizon Lines to the Port of Philadelphia. The new weekly service, connecting Philadelphia and San Juan (PR), began April 11, and will bring a vessel to every Thursday to the terminal. It will handle a variety of containerized cargoes such as pharmaceuticals and perishables. Transit time is 3.5 days.

Kinder Morgan’s soda ash export facility at the Port of Portland’s Terminal 4 is being upgraded with the installation of a new ship loader, removal of an outmoded structure and berth dredging. The work is slated for completion in September. Soda ash, or trona, is used in the manufacture of glass and detergents. Mined in Green River, Wyo., it is exported through Portland to countries around the world.

 Robert "Bob" DeAngelis was sworn in April 9 as chief financial officer/treasurer of the Port of San Diego. In that role, Mr. DeAngelis oversees the port’s financial services, accounting, and business and information technology services functions. He succeeds Jeff McEntee, who is retiring in May after 25 years with the port.

It was a record-breaking first quarter for Port Saint John, highlighted by traffic increases from a year ago in these areas: Potash up 141 percent to an all-time high of 277,249 metric tons; forest products up 32 percent, with woodpulp alone soaring 71 percent to 22,517 tons from 13,136 tons in first quarter 2012; containerized cargo up 72 percent from 63,984 tonnes to 110,128 tonnes; and container TEUs up 52 percent from 10,978 to 16,645 TEUs.

 The Port of South Louisiana dedicated a new finger pier and maritime security operations center during ceremonies held April 9 at its Globalplex terminal in Reserve, La. The $19.5 million finger pier, a 700-foot by 65-foot extension of the general cargo dock, was funded in part by a $15 million grant from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development’s Port Construction and Development Priority Program. The project also included the demolition and reconstruction of the downriver mooring dolphin. The new Maritime Security Operations Center (MSOC), also located within Globalplex Intermodal Terminal, is a 2,000 square-foot hardened concrete and steel structure with impact-resistant glass, built to withstand 150 mile-per-hour winds.

 The environmental and sustainability program that governs all of the cargo terminals owned, leased and operated by the Virginia Port Authority has won a gold medal in this year’s Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards. The award recognizes organizations or facilities that can document the success of their sustainability program by providing evidence of: 1) a culture of environmental sustainability; 2) recent accomplishments related to reducing their environmental footprint; and 3) a commitment to future sustainability-oriented actions.
